from this site:

http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_3195.html#petitioner_documents

as the petitioner I have to send:

Petitioner Documents

Who needs to submit petitioner documents?

If you are applying for an IR5 (Parent of a U.S. Citizen) visa, you are required to provide:

  1. Original or certified copy of your Petitioner’s birth certificate
  2. Original or certified copy of your Petitioner’s marriage certificate from the Petitioner’s current and all previous marriages.

Question is: How will I get my documents back IF I decide to send my ORIGINAL documents????

but it has to be a notarized copy of the BC - sometimes it's hard here in the state of Texas to get a notarized copy of a document that is already certified! ugh

it's my understanding that if you send:

1. original or certified copy and

2. regular photocopy

in with the civil docs set,

then the original (or certified copy) is returned on interview day, to the visa applicant.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

lol that i don't want to send in my ORIGINAL just for them to IT UP :)

and they do send only certified copies of the original OR the original ITSELF is acceptable, plain ol color photocopy is NOT acceptable, but go ahead and tell me it is :)

Huh? please re-read post #6, noting the use of 'or' and 'and' there.

I'll suggest something else to you. Your mother can order a certified copy of your birth certificate, back in the UK, without her having the original in her hand.

Actually Darnell is right as usual. You can apply online to the General Records Office (GRO) in the UK for a certified copy of your birth certificate.
