Ran into a lady in Sams today . I heard her tell her son it was the governments fault they were there

Turns out all the commissaries are shut down., now that is nuts

of course the time of the commissaries might be over soon anyway

I'm glad Sam's extended their membership to all military for free. It was a mad house at the commissary here on Monday.

So they should spend money they don't have to support privately run hotels?

No. But tourism accounts for a good bit of our economy. In some places, it accounts for most of the economy. Kill it and the deficit will get worse not better. When airlines, hotels, restaurants and other businesses in the travel and leisure industry flourish, more people are employed, more people pay taxes, fewer people rely on public benefits and local, state and the federal government have more revenue coming in keeping things going. You wanna cut those revenue streams in order to make the deficit smaller. That's like proposing to quit a job so you can pay off a loan faster. Makes no sense whatsoever.

Well that's what happens when you spend more than you collect. As far as I can tell, those tourist places aren't going anywhere. They can sell the private interests and let them run them. we could have the Washington monument sponsored by Pepsi. Or the Smithsonian sponsored by Google. I know that sucks, but that's what you get when run up a debt like that.

This notion you have that we should keep these things we can't afford because it might hurt the economy, is the height of stupidity.

You keep acting like the government is supposed to perform as some kind of business. That's what got us into this mess. ####### are they doing running tourist attractions when they have a 16 trillion dollar debt anyway?

That's a good question. I think Sam's is better in the terms of bulk. If you're the kind of person who buys food by the pound and spends a couple hundred dollars at one time, Sam's is the way to go. If you're like my family and just gets what you need for the time being, commissary is more your style. Most folks like it because you live on base so it's right there.

My argument is that we're getting a pretty good bang out of the buck from these things. The height of stupidity is to willfully slow down the very economy that we need to run stronger in order to have any chance to tackle the deficit.

Yes. Once I went to Dierbergs to do a price and product comparison. You might have a better quality of selection out in town, but the price is about double for what you pay on base. Ball Park hamburgers are 4.99 on base. Out in town, you 're looking at 9.99 before taxes hit.

Here is the message we got on Thurdsay:

During the government shut down and your commissary being closed ~ all

military families are able to shop at Sam's Club. All they need to do is

bring their military ID card and present that at the cash register and they

will have a special membership card to finalize their purchase. The gas

station will also have the membership card to allow military families to use

the station when they present their ID. Their will be no additional

upcharge or surcharge to their purchases.

We thank you all for your service! Thank you for all you do!

Please let me know if you need anything!

Again the govt. has no business getting a bang out of any buck. They're not there to turn a profit. You can't keep spending money you don't have simply to keep the economy going. The government has no business doing that espeically when they have a 16 trillion dollar debt. LIke I said, if we had all this extra money laying around, it might be something to look at. We don't have any money.

They reported locally on the commissary closures at McDill AFB here in Tampa. The gist of the story was that going to general public stores would cost military families some 30% more on their grocery bills. Now, Sams Club may have some good deals on some stuff but it is NOT 30% below other groceries. Not even close.

I have no idea, folks are too upset about shopping out in town. They need to pull their heads out of their butts and get it done.
