Ran into a lady in Sams today . I heard her tell her son it was the governments fault they were there

Turns out all the commissaries are shut down., now that is nuts

of course the time of the commissaries might be over soon anyway

So the private sector steps up. Imagine that. They probably do a better job anyway. I'd take a guess that they'll probably wish they were still getting a deal at Sams rather than shopping at the govt. commissary after this is all over. Maybe not.

Sam's Club Extends Help to Military Following commissary Shutdowns

In response to dozens of domestic commissaries shutting down Wednesday as a part of the government shutdown, Sam’s Club has decided to help out the affected communities and military members.

In appreciation for the service that military personnel provide, Sam’s Club locations near military bases will waive membership requirements for military personnel, retirees and their families so they may continue saving on everyday goods and groceries.

These Sam’s Club locations will remain open to military personnel and families until the U.S. government resumes domestic commissary operations.

Nobody is going to quit making airplanes. You know that. You're being silly now. Some stupid battery grounded the entire fleet of 787s. There's always delays in delivering aircraft. If that's all you got, this is definitely worth it.

It's not just the aircrafts. I was going to take my folks up to DC in a couple of weeks while they're here visiting from Germany. That's not happening now since I don't know that parks and sites and museums and the Capitol will be open for them to see. Airlines lose revenues. Hotels lose revenues. Restaurants lose revenues. Shops lose reveneues. Multiply that by the number of people cancelling trips to national sites. And that's just travel and hospitality. There's an severe impact to the economy. You can deny that all you want and pretend for yourself that somehow this is fiscally beneficial. But that does't change the simple fact that this moronic action of the jihadists actually COSTS money.

Let this go for two weeks and it will cost hundreds of thousands o jobs. Billions of dollars in economic activity. Lost tax revenues that will far outpace any saings you think there are to be had. This is the stupidest way to go about deficit reduction. There's really no possible way more moronioc than what you are advocating here.

Shut down the IRS.

There's no money for the government to be spending on parks and museums. You know that. We've argued here about trillions of dollars of debt. Parks and museums are nice if you have the money for them. We don't. Sell them off and privatize them. I know that sounds harsh, but there's no money. Tough decisions need to be made.

Like I said, I don't know much about that, but I'd guess they'd probably rather be getting a good deal at Sams.

Yes, kill tourism and the hospitality industry to bring the fiscal house in order. Good Lord.

All the people who think this is no big deal are obviously not personally affected. We were alerted by homeland security that some essential services may not be available during the shutdown. What a great time to take advantage of the lax in security. But then again, that's obviously Obama's fault. ;)

So they should spend money they don't have to support privately run hotels? Since when is it the govt's responsibility to make sure hotel rooms are full? Hey I might support something like that if we were flush with all this extra cash, but we're not.

I had a family member call me recently asking to borrow money to make the payment on their BMW. I suggested they sell the car since it's almost paid off and maybe use the money to buy something more reasonable. That way they would have no car payment and some cash left over. They were having none of that. This thread reminds of that conversation for some reason.

Maybe if they used the security fees they charge on every single airline ticket for actual homeland security, and not dump it into the general fund, there wouldn't be an issue.

I just priced a ticket to PI this week. The ticket round trip was $400 in airfare and $435 in fees/taxes to make it $835 total.

Where the hell do all those fees go?

It's crazy...

laughing.gif Since the ticket was double, they should give you your own personal security guard for the flight. $835 is pretty good though. I've been pricing tickets to Thailand, and they've all been ~$1300

Eva air has been cheapest for a while. Check their Thai flights.

They same ticket to PI was $1300 in the summer.
