I have a small issue and wanted to know if anyone here on the forum has had experience with a situation like this .

On my fiances passport from Pakistan , the passport office made a mistake when listing his name .

The way is should be ( correct )

Given Name: Irfan

Family Name : Ullah

The way they listed it ( incorrect )

Given Name :

Family Name : Irfan Ullah

His immigration forms are all correct and he has traveled many times using the incorrect passport.

My question is: Will this pose a problem when trying to enter the USA on a K1 visa ? Should he have his passport fixed immediately, or is it not a big deal ?

I had a similar issue with my fiancee in that her last name was hyphened in real life and on the birth certificate, but on the passport they only had the last half of her last name (family name) and put the hyphen part as a second middle name.

When we filled out all the K-1 forms, we listed the true last name. We scanned all the pages of her passport, and the pages of her incorrect last name, in case needed as evidence, and then sent off to have her passport renewed.

The advice I gathered from fellow VJers is that the name on the passport will overrule the name on the birth certificate, so I was recommended to get the passport of her's fixed, so we did

Hope that helps.

i would say its a big deal and a serious issue. they might look at it as fraud being done, in their sense its two different names. i think u can catch my drift and this can create problems later on in the case.

Hi Grace

It seems that you are finally out of the year long AP. If that's so, please accept my heartiest felicitations. You two have indeed been very patient. I hope and pray you are both united very soon.

As regards the question, I may not have the most useful information. However, I remember when we are filling in the forms, we are asked if any other names have been used by us. But I still don't know if it applies in this case as US immigration laws are very strict and having and not having a given name can change things. But, might I ask if the same was pointed out by the CO at the time of interview? He may have travelled to other countries though where the laws are not that strict or such mistakes can be neglected.

But, keep your fingers crossed and pray like you have been and you will find a solution.

Nobody in Pakistan knows what their first and last names are! I discovered this when filling out the forms for my fiance. We had to put her first and last name. First she told me her last name is two words. Although on all her official documents it's one word. Then she told me they made a mistake!

Then her dad turns out to only have one name - which is the same as her last name - and which I assume is his last name too - but who knows!! That caused a lot of confusion for ME! It must have taken us 20 minutes for her to convince me he really didn't have a first name! Then forget about it when it came to her mother's name - and maiden name. She knew one or two of the names but had no idea which was which - first, last or maiden! And even less of an idea how to spell any of them! And her mom had no idea either!

Finally, I told her we would have to just go by whatever was on each person's passport. So as I was typing in the information just as it was on their passports my fiance was screaming, "that's not right, that's not right!!" But I told her, it didn't matter what was right or wrong. It only mattered what was on the passports.

I think you should change the name on your fiance's passport. I could see it very easily causing problems on the US side. They can be very unforgiving when it comes to any variation in names.
