I am helping my wife to fill out her N-400

There is a question about me that asks "When did I become a US citizen?" Part-8, Qurstion D

I have no idea and I don't know where to look that up.

Anyone had this prolem? Can I guestimate this?

I searched this web site and couldn't find the answer.

Thank you

I think you look on the naturalization certificate (and it is the date of the oath ceremony).

I thought of that but can't find the certificate. It must have been over 25 years ago.

I think my last resort will be to get a replcaement but that will cost $380. I'd like to avoid that extra cost if possible.

Instead send a copy of the passport. See if you can find anywhere when you became a US citizen. You might need that 380 for something else.

They are not asking for proof of citizenship. They are asking for date I became a citizen. I found the year, but I cannot pinpoint the exact date.

Yes, keeping the $380 for myself can help me with a lot of other things if I can help it.

Thank you

you have 2 solutions:

1) you book an info pass , and then you ask them to look that information up in their Databas.

2) you file a FOIA request , and then. they will send you a photocopy of your naturalization certificate or your whole A file. [ this solution might take some time ]

AOS

day 1 -- 04/11/2012-- package sent to Chicago

day 2 -- 04/12/2012-- package was received.

day 43-- 05/23/2012-- Notice for an interview is received for 06/26 @ 2pm

day 63-- 06/12/2012-- Received a Text & email for an update- Card production EAD/AP

day 77-- 06/26/2012-- interview / approved on the spot.

day 86-- 07/05/2012-- Received my GC in the mail.

ROC

day 1 -- 04/07/2014 -- ROC Package delivered to VSC

day 16 -- 04/23/2014 -- Walk-in Bio.

day 197 -- 10/20/2014-- Approval Letter received dated 10/16/2014

day 202 -- 10/25/2014-- GC received

I did not know that the FOIA is an option. Wouldn't that contain way too many personal data?

Also, I was hoping to just put the year instead of the exact date. Has anyone done that? Did it work?

First thing that struck me when looking over that N-400, with all those questions and required evidence, how in the hell does the USCIS think my wife received her green card in the first place?

In opening all of our AOS and ROC applications, same old questions, filling out the N-400 form became mostly a copy and paste operation with just some minor updates. And fortunately, back then, scanned all this evidence, just had to buy a new toner cartridge and a stack of paper to print all this same stuff again.

You certainly had to answer this question during your AOS stage, what did you do back then?

They never asked for the date I became a citizen. I have everything scanned and documented too. They also never asked about the date of my previous marriage.

Like you said, the questions are ver redundant.

Looked up that form, guess I just tacked in an N/A in that spot.

But I don't see a mm/dd/yyyy in that spot, so would try just using the yyyy and whatever proof you have as a USC. That may be your certificate, you no longer have or your current US passport.

Wife with a photographic memory, said her strict IO just skipped over that part, even though I provided my birth certificate and US passport. But she sure wanted to see our tax returns and a worthless joint utility bill.

Unlike a green card, there is no law I know of where you have to maintain your certificate of citizenship, most kids only have a US passport anyway.

OP I see you did the I-130 in 2010. I hope you still have a copy. If you look at question #13, you had to answer the same question. If you don't have or can't locate a copy, do an info pass and get the information. Good Luck.

K1 - Filed March 2011

- Denied March 13, 2012

- Placed in AP March 14,2012

- Sent back to USCIS November 2012

- Expired March 2013

WASTED A YEAR FIGHTING THE DENIEL

MARRIED MARCH 15, 2013

1-130 Approved 3/3/2014 :-)

I looked at that. I had check this box:

Naturalization. Give certificate number and date and place of issuance.

and wrote this in its place: "I have a U.S. Passport, copy provided"

I think I will just write the year and send it out. If they come back and want the exact date, then I will spend the $380 to get a copy of the certificate.
