Hello everyone!

I'll be receiving my GC soon, which I'll be getting through my dad who's a USC. I'm getting the GC as an IR-2 petitioner (maybe that would make a difference)

My question here is, if I get married to a non us citizen, and wanted to bring her to the US...as a GC holder, how long would it take for her to be here with me in the states?

Thank you so much in advance for your replies.

Karim

It depends on where your wife is from. If she is from India/China/Mexico/Philippines then you have to watch VISA bulletin every freaking month because even if your I-130 gets approved, NVC will not process your case until Priority date is current if your wife is from these four backlogged countries.

If your wife is from another country not bound by VISA bulletin and country based backlogs you could bring her sooner provided your I-130 gets approved sooner. I would say about 1yr-2yrs depending on the country of birth of your wife.

Well, we're both Egyptians. I honestly don't know if the waiting time would be too long or not.

Also, how long am I allowed to stay out of the US as a GC holder?

Google "maintaining legal permanent residency USCIS."

You can temporarily be outside the US, but you must maintain ties to the US. Up to 6 months outside the US, no problem. Longer then that, then you want to get a Re-entry permit which allows you to stay outside the US for up to 2 years.

Be careful since you still need to meet the financial requirements of the I-864 to bring your spouse to the US.

It currently takes a year for an an LPR to petition a spouse.

It use to take 2.5 years, but that is no longer true. People are telling you 2.5 years based on old information.

Hello Keemo,

I am a LPR myself which I got through my dad and then I had applied for my wife (currently in India, an Indian citizen) in 4th February, 2013, starting with the I130 petition. For some reason, the USCIS has become very active in the last 2 months or so and just within 8 months, the I130 has been approved today, on 4th October 2013. If everything goes well, I am guessing from my own experience that it shouldn't take her more than middle of 2014 to come here after all the documentation formalities have been completed in a timely manner. So, altogether, if USCIS can keep up the current pace, then it should take you 1.5 years at most to bring in your wife to USA.

Hope this helps!
