I got my letter from my employer some time back saying because I get insurance from them I wouldn't qualify for subsidies (the advanced premium tax credit) were I to go to the Marketplace for coverage.

So I assumed that was true for my mom too. I didn't even call to ask. I figured I know.

Well, I found out today that the coverage she gets doesn't count! Because it's not "affordable". Her premiums are over 50% of what she makes (before taxes) so if she goes to the Marketplace (which she will once they get the website up and running) she qualifies for subsidies.

I commented to her, hey you never know, Boehner might win this thing and Obamacare might go bye bye.

And she (she doesn't consume the news) says, the republicans would never do that to us. I didn't want to disappoint her so I left it at that.

But I learned something new today.

Not all employer provided coverage counts.

That is right. Some employer sponsored coverage is not "affordable" under PPACA.
