My questions is more of fact gathering find!

This past weekend I visit an old college friend and her family. We started to talk about my personal situation. Well my good friend is Filipino but American born. She was telling a story of another filipino woman in her area. My friend lives in the Scranton/Clark Summit, PA area. This filipino came her several years and married an American. They have 1 kid together. This filipina is her late 20's early 30's. I am thinking they have be been married for atleast 7 years because the daughter is that old now. My friend thinks she is in a verbally abusive relationship with the American husband. She has no accesss to phone, can't leave the home and the daughter is currently home schooled. The husband is very controlling! The filipina wife always ask my college friend if she thinks he will change but in the end she is basically afraid to leave him! She just doesn't have resources of her own and afraid to step out for herself. My question is the issue of ID's. My friend told me that she doesn't have her passport or GC on hand. The husband has them locked up. I am pretty sure she has a 10 year GC. Don't GC holder's must have their documentation on hand at all times? I am still getting more information from my friend but it seem this situation seems very illegal. I could be wrong but I want to find out information to help my friend gets this woman out of a bad relationship. Any thoughs or advice?

Michael

She's been here that long and been quite for her situation,.. She needs help for sure if that's the case. Is there any way you can talk to her personally with your friend,to really know the situation ?.of course she has rights on her own, but if she loves her husband and still hoping things will change in spite of all, that's gonna be hard, she'll be refusing some help.

Well, I have 51 year filipina in my area that just got out of her abusive relationship. I was planning on her to my friends house one week to visit this woman and maybe convince her that it is town to get out of this bad relationship.

A green card holder over 18 is required to carry it on their person at all times; not doing so is a federal misdemeanor punishable by up to thirty days in jail, a $100 fine, or both (INA Sec. 264 (e)).

If she is in an abusive relationship then she should leave and file for divorce. She can file an I-90 to obtain a replacement green card if her husband will not give her the original back.

If there is abuse occurring (emotional, verbal, whatever the case may be) and she wants to leave the situation and get help she could contact the Women's Resource Center http://www.wrcnepa.org/ . Organizations like this can do things like help her find shelter for herself and her child, possible legal assistance, domestic abuse counseling, education, etc. BUT (and I stress this) this is something she would need to do and must be legitimate. If she is confused and not sure what her options are she can still call and talk to someone and they can help guide her. I must stress, that this is her choice and no one else can force her to take this kind of step. I am only advising on what you have posted and do not know what the situation is but if it as you believe and she is looking for assistance this is a possible avenue.

Good advice, this happened to one of my wife's friends that came here, with legal help, a restraining order was put against her abusive husband. This was in Milwaukee and they also have a home there for abused women with free room and board. And help was there so she could get back on her feet. So there are ways she can do this, if she wants to. I met her husband, this guy was a first class jerk, never physically abused her, but was constantly verbally insulting her. Just told him to back off in our presence, he did. But help is available to her, if she wants it.
