One bright note on the shutdown; two weddings were canceled. ;)

A KKK rally Oct. 5 and two weddings in coming weeks are among the events being cancelled at Gettysburg National Military Park due to the federal government shutdown.

The park is closed and all permits for special events in October have been rescinded, including the Oct. 5 First Amendment demonstration to be held by the Confederate White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, said a park news release. The group had received a special use permit to gather on the lawn north of Meade’s Headquarters along Taneytown Road.

Permits for at least 11 events in October have been rescinded, said Katie Lawhon, management assistant at Gettysburg National Military Park, noting that the list was as of two weeks ago.

The Museum and Visitor Center is permitted to remain open for business because it is owned and operated by the Gettysburg Foundation. The David Wills House and Eisenhower National Historic Site are closed.

The majority of the 26 miles of roads through the Gettysburg park are closed to motorists, hikers and bicyclists.

Only park roads that serve as thruways will remain open, such as Millerstown Road and Wheatfield Road as well as the route consisting of North Reynolds Ave to Doubleday Avenue to Robinson Avenue to allow for resident access, said the Park Service. Seminary Ridge Avenue and West Confederate Avenue to the McMillan House will remain open for resident access – the rest of West Confederate Avenue and all other park avenues will be closed.

Lawhon said she doesn’t know how the cancelled permits would be handled if the shutdown would end this month. “It’s too early to say. We’ll have to answer that question when the shutdown ends,” she said.

Other cancelled permits include:

  • Oct. 3: Geology tour of the battlefield, sponsored by York County parks department; and wreath-laying on a Third U.S. Infantry monument by the Old Guard Association.
  • Oct. 12 weekend: Fall muster field program and activities for Friends of Gettysburg, sponsored by Gettysburg Foundation.
  • Oct. 12 and 19: Two weddings at the amphitheater, which is the only place weddings are allowed in the park.
  • Oct. 12: Men’s ministry event by Calvary Chapel of Philadelphia near Meade’s headquarters.
  • Oct. 19: U.S. Marine Corps retirement ceremony near the Virginia Memorial.

Licensed battlefield guides may conduct tours that do not use federal property, such as on county and state roads through the park like Business Route 15 and Routes 97 and Mummasburg Road, although no stopping or parking will be permitted along park National Park Service property.

Damn! I just picked up my sheet and tie from the cleaners too.

Me too. I had mine bleached to a sparkly white... all for nothing! What is our country coming to when Real Patriotic® Murkhans can't hate in peace!

What's funny is that in their minds a black man is responsible for shutting down their Klan rally. It's that or blame the Republicans for it. lol

How sweet is that?

They'll blame Obama one way or the other. Doesn't matter. The GOP could issue a press release taking the blame and the KKK would still blame Obama. They're stupid like that.
