House defeats narrow funding bills

The House defeated three targeted government funding bills, as the first day of a government shutdown ended on Capitol Hill.

The bills would have funded national parks and veterans affairs, and one would have allowed the District of Columbia to use local revenue to fund governmental functions. The legislation came up under a fast-track procedure, which required two-thirds majority for House passage.

Senate Democrats and President Barack Obama said they were opposed to the bills.

The Mayor of DC was on CNN today, claiming he was quite confused as to what's what,

as

the tax coffers for DC are full, and there's funds to manage the museums in town.

Of course, those funds won't get used, as the buildings are under federal management, and not District Management.

Why is Boehner not simply bringing the CR up for a vote that the Senate sent him? It will pass with bi-partisan support. Boehner just has to allow an up or down vote on it. Why is he refusing to fund the government? Fund it at levels that the Republicans have already agreed to. What's holding him back?

Spending bills have to originate in the House.

It did. The Senate sent it back to the House as a clean CR. All Boehner has to do is bring it up for a vote and the government is funded at the very levels that the House passed.
