I think it's a good thing.. Seems like the govt. is spending less money during this "shutdown" Nothing major is really affected. They'd just be spending money they don't have anyway.

no way. it will cost more to start up again once they get back to it.

i don't work for the govt but i work with the TTB, they've had a huge backlog all summer. they were just getting caught up and now, nothing.

how are the american people going to responsibly drink wine and craft beers without properly approved warning labels on containers? HOW?!

Maybe they should leave it "shut down" for awhile. Maybe then people would realize that the money being spent on the things that are shutdown, weren't really that important anyway, and there's no need to start them back up.

What about the VA and people needing their Social Security checks and medicare.

Ah screw em, half are old anyway.

i'm not sure karee. the ttb handles some pretty perilous territory. for example - can you imagine an american seeing this image on a bottle of wine?

stock-vector--no-alcohol-for-pregnant-wo

this is how the irresponsible EU labels their wine. the ttb absolutely prohibits this image being used on imported alcoholic beverages in this country. i mean..americans can't wrap their brains around the huge red slash over the pregnant lady drinking. we have to read the warning, in the proper TTB approved format. american fetuses are drunk right now, karee. this shut down is a travesty.

That's incorrect. The net cost of the 1995/96 shutdown to the government was some 2 billion dollars in today's dollars. This government shutdown will likewise cost the government extra money. Plus it will impact the economy reducing economic growth and thus reduce tax receipts among other things. This little tantrum the spoiled little brats of the tea party are throwing costs you money.

Shutting down the government with no real reason or agenda; that's freedom people...that's freedom.

And that's just flat out stupid.

The furloghed workers get paid for their time off later. That's pretty cool for them. It's like a Republican sponsored paid vacation. And people are always crying that the Republicans hate the little guy.

From your link:

The Office of Management and Budget estimated that two government shutdowns in 1995 and 1996, totaling 27 days, cost the federal government $1.4 billion. That's over $2 billion in today's dollars on costs like back pay to furloughed federal workers and uncollected fines and taxes.

As far as the uncollected taxes, did they govt. just say "Don't worry about it. Since we were shut down, you don't owe us any taxes for that period of time"

I absolutely luved SJL's tirade on the floor of the house, claiming she was still part of the Texas Contingent. Well, luving, in a ironic, sarcastic sort-of-way.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Ah screw em, half are old anyway.

Not all government functions will simply evaporate come Oct. 1 — Social Security checks will still get mailed, and veterans' hospitals will stay open.

Not sure. But there are fewer taxes to collect to begin with since the economy takes a hit due to the uncertainty created with this shutdown. A smaller economy has fewer jobs, less economic activity and thus produces less tax revenue. There's no upside to a shutdown of the federal government. None.

By that logic, there would be no upside to getting rid of Federal agencies and employees that are not needed because it might hurt the economy.

If only Putin could help us...

Since Russia has their own version of Obama care, I am not sure how he could help.....

other than to put it on display, which of course would demonstrate why people who have money, get private care.

Nope, that's a different discussion. Remember, the government is not in shut down because there was any disagreement over the funding level of the federal government for the next few weeks. Democrats have passed the funding number that the House Republicans passed. This isn't about what the federal government spends. It's about a group of spoiled little brats - or a group of economic terrorists depending on how you look at these fools - that are incapable of accepting that America has spoken on Obamacare and that because America has spoken on Obamacare it is here to stay.

Anyone who believes that the Government Shut down with save the country money is delusional. There is nothing good about an unscheduled shutdown, not one thing. If you really believe that this is a good thing, you have been brainwashed. This is not a good way to reduce government spending, the end result will be more debt for everyone. We know who to blame and hopefully when it comes to the polls we will put our votes where they count.
