Hi,

I am on a 10 year green card and have been a permeant resident for 2.5 years. I will be filing for my citizenship in December. My question is I have a job starting up in Vancouver. My permanent residence is in Seattle but In order to make my commute easier I am going to rent a room in Bellingham and travel to Vancouver monday to thursday and thursday through sunday i will be in Seattle. I am wondering if this will pose a problem with my citizenship. I was thinking of renting a room in Vancouver for 4 days a week but i was assuming this would not be allowed. I am wondering if anyone has experience with residing in the us but working in canada.

thank you,

Marigee

~~Moved to the Canada Forum, from Working and Traveling- as the question is also seeking experience from other Canadians working in Canada while living in the US.~~

If people are not sure...they usually do not post. When you apply for citizenship there is a part on the form where you have to put down ALL visits out of the USA---for 24 hours or longer(hope u have been keeping track). And if they deem that you have been out of the USA, more than you have been in it, then one may run into problems. In this case I would "think" it may not be a huge deal as you will not have been doing it for that long, only a few months. There are a fair # of green holders that still commute to Canada daily, but they usually return to the USA after work. And as part of having a Greencard, you are expected to be spending the majority of your time in the USA, and again, you probably have been up to this point, so its only a short amount of time. Just my 2 cents, which really means nothing, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
