A couple broke into a Pennsylvania home and killed the woman's mother and brother before being shot to death by her father, the culmination of a long-running feud fueled by what a relative said Saturday was the woman's "hatred" for her family.

State police said the home invasion happened Friday night in Ashville, a rural community about 40 miles southwest of State College in central Pennsylvania.

Investigators said the father found his wife and son fatally shot, then in turn shot the two intruders. The father, identified by a relative as John Frew, was not injured.

I don't recall the exact numbers, but since gun homicides peaked, the US population has increased by about 50 million people, millions more guns have been sold and the murder rate by firearms has gone down.

Facts in a lib thread reported as a TOS violation

Danno posted what I believe are the correct numbers in terms of total gun deaths and rate/per 100k

Wrong. Now, the murder rate overall has decreased. That is true. But firearms continue to account for more than 2 out of 3 murders. That rate hasn't moved down one inch.

No, Danno (and the rest of you reality divorced gun aficionados). What we have is more guns getting into the hands of the same people that already own many. That means that there are more guns out there but nothing else. When it comes to gun ownership rates, well gun ownership rates have been on just as steady a decline as murders. And that's not a coincidence.

The household gun ownership rate has fallen from an average of 50 percent in the 1970s to 49 percent in the 1980s, 43 percent in the 1990s and 35 percent in the 2000s, according to the survey data, analyzed by The New York Times.

In 2012, the share of American households with guns was 34 percent, according to survey results released on Thursday. Researchers said the difference compared with 2010, when the rate was 32 percent, was not statistically significant.

The findings contrast with the impression left by a flurry of news reports about people rushing to buy guns and clearing shop shelves of assault rifles after the massacre last year at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.
