A National Rifle Association (NRA) lobbyist this week lashed out at critics who called on NBC Sports to cancel his hunting program after it aired an episode where he shot an elephant in the face.

By Friday, almost 50,000 people had reacted to this week’s episode of Under Wild Skies — which features gun lobbyist Tony Makris shooting an elephant in the face and then drinking champagne — by asking NBC Sports to cancel the NRA-sponsored show.

In an interview with the NRA talk show host Cam Edwards on Thursday, Makris explained how he responded to animal rights activists who could not understand why he would kill an elephant.

“The short answer is because hungry people eat them and because I’m a hunter,” he said. “You know, I’m not an elephant hunter. I’m a hunter. I hunt all things.”

Makris continued: “And they go, ‘They’re so big and kind and gentle and smart.’ And I said, ‘Okay, let me ask you a question. Should I be able to shoot birds? Well, I guess that’s okay. Ducks? Yeah. Pigeons? Oh, they’re flying rats, okay. Rabbits? Well rabbits are cute. But yeah. Squirrels? That’s nothing but a rat with a tail — with a fuzzy tail.’ And I said, ‘Well deer eat all my mother’s roses in Long Island.’ And I go, ‘So I can shoot all of those, but not an elephant?’”

Makris called that philosophy “a very unique form of animal racism.”

“And now they’re shocked,” he added. “And they said, ‘But they’re so big and special and they’re smarter.’”

“And I went, ‘You know, Hitler would have said the same thing.’”

I thought the biggest problem with big game hunting was the indiscriminate hunting by outsiders who do not respect the ecology and simply hunt for trophies and profit. What #######.

Anti-gun fascists do not accept any reason for the private ownership of firearms. which type of hunting do you think The Truth and Patriot approve of? what type of guns do you think they believe you should be able to own? The bolt action and break action 2 and 3 shot rifles used for elephant hunting? Obviously NO.

The only countries that allow regulated sport elephant hunting are the ones that have an abundant population of the animals. Regulated sport hunting has never endangered any species of animal. When an elephant is facing you and is cap able of crushing you under his feet you shoot him in the brain with a thick jacketed "solid" bullet that can penetrate 2 feet of bone to get to the brain. That means he gets shot in the "face", between the eyes to be exact. So what? Do you think it is OK with The Truth to shoot him in the heart? Maybe wait until he turns and shoot him in the ear? Of course not. She hates guns and hunting, wants you not to be able to own them for any reason. Do you think she likes bear hunting? Deer hunting? Do you think it is Ok with this tyoe of person to shoot quail with an O/U shotgun?

They hate self defense (the GZ fiasco abundantly showed that) they hate collecting (who needs to own that many guns?) they hate hunting, they want to ban the most commonly used rifles in target competition in the United States.

They even oppose the safety of children. They oppose putting armed guards in schools and rather want "background checks" The same checks the Navy Yard shooter passed three days before he was allowed to kill 12 people before good guys with guns could arrive. Obama finally listened to the NRA and approved funding for armed security in schools and for being able to track mentally ill people. Both of which were NRA proposals. Of course with less fanfare than the ill fated attempt at stripping our rights. Imagine that. Even the "Brady Bill" was the NRA supported Instant Background Check System, not the Sarah Brady supported waiting period. We let Clinton claim "credit" for that.

Penny laments the lack of intelligent conversation on the issue. With whom Penny? I am as capable as anyone of intelligent conversation about firearms and fireams laws. With whom? who claims to build guns and cary concealed handguns (but only when he "needs one") but be against the ownership of rearms? Him? Really? I do no thavs claire voyance to know when I "need" my conceald handgun...so far, never. I guess one must have killed some people or at least some bears, if one only carries when one "needs" to.

Or someone that doesn't know how a sear wroks, thinks a magazine and clip are the same, has friends making unregistered machine guns (not really, that would be illegal) and wants elephants shot in a nicer place than the face.

Maybe someone with no knowledge of Swiss gun laws who wants Swiss gun laws for the United States? YES they do. That NRA hunter paid thousainds of dollars for the licens to shoot the elephant. That money is used to protect the other elephants from UNregulated hunting (AKA "poaching") and is the reason that country has enough elephants to allow regulated hunting and the countries that do not get management paid for have endangered populations of the animals.

When the animal popualtions of Africa were protected and controlled by "White Men", most notably British white men, the animals were healthy and abundant. Once the countries were "free" and banned hunting to discourage the presence of the (largely) British "white men" and the elephants were left to the mercy of terrorists and revolutionaries shooting them indiscrimnately for $$$$ to support government overthrows (think "blood diamonds" on four feet) selling the ivory, then the elephants were decimated. 100+ years of the regulated "ivory trade" could not wipe them out. 30 years of neglect could. The Ivory trade did result in cities, railroads,airports infrastructurwe and healthy elephant populations...and healthy populations of rhinos and lions and leopards and buffalo. "protecting the animals" from the evil British white men wiped them out! Now they have to drug the rhinos and cut off their horns to protect them from poachers. You think it is NRA members going to Africa to kill rhinos and saw off their horns for illegal sales? Really? You think they are "white men"? Really? Do you think it was native Africans that implemented the international CITES treaty? Give me a break.

Regulated big game hunting does not involve the indiscrimnate hunting of anything by anyone. Not that it matters to you. There is no "problem" with regulated big game hunting. The countries that allow regulated elephant hunting have healthy populations of the animals. The ones that don't allow regulated elephant hunting have endangered populations of elephants. Coincidence maybe?

What animals do you approve of hunting and killing with guns? Where? By whom? Where would you like elephants to be shot?

I spot a common trait amongst NRA members. Invent nflammatory and preposterous reasons for people objecting to the things you do and proceed to point out they are absurd and preposterous thus rendering it unnecessary to look at the real reasons people object to your actions and behaviours.
