Biometrics interview on Oct 1.

Hi all,

My wife has her biometrics appointment scheduled at USCIS on October 1, when the government is likely to shut down. I called the number on the I-797C to see if I could get confirmation about their being closed during a shutdown and some guidance on what to do next, but the person I spoke to didn't seem to understand anything about the shutdown. Has anyone else called and gotten a better answer?

The government is unlikely to shut down on the 1st, so she should be fine, I think the last reports suggested the government would run out of money mid october.

Agreed. You should be fine. I heard on the radio this morning that the Senate was passing a bill to keep them running past the planned Oct 1 shutdown date.

There have also been discussions about which arms of the government would be affected by the shutdown....and immigration services are likely something deemed essential. They may end up moving even more slowly, but it's unlikely that USCIS would be able to shut down completely.

But it's the government, so who knows what the reality will be!

Should be!

I think the only possibility is a diminished workforce, but yes, it should remain functioning.

USCIS gets their money from fees, so the government shutdown has no effect.

What about appointments from now on? BBC says the shutdown is on from today. I have an appointment on th 3rd

Exactly. As I said earlier, USCIS is funded by fees and thus should only be minimally impacted by the shutdown. The USCIS website says in big letters:

"ALL USCIS OFFICES WORLDWIDE ARE OPEN - REPORT TO INTERVIEW AND APPOINTMENTS AS SCHEDULED".

Hi guys,

Like the above posters said, the USCIS office was open today. My wife was able to go to her biometrics appointment without any problems. It looks like for this government shutdown more services are being provided than during the 1995/96 shutdown, when passport processing and some other services from State were closed.
