I have never heard of a round trip ticket being cheaper than a one way ticket. The problem you could run into (IMHO) is the airlines or immigration might question why he would have a return ticket if he is in fact immigrating to the US. Could this raise some suspicion? I am not sure. Good luck and God Speed.

They don't care about your return ticket, go with whatever is the cheapest. You can cancel the return part when you are in the US.

Check to see if you have sufficient frequent flier miles to obtain a one-way ticket and then get on the phone.

Hope he has a pleasant trip, that is a long long ride. Airlines drive me nuts when a round trip ticket is cheaper than a one way ticket. Got those to bring my girls here. Couldn't refund the return trip, ha, good if they changed their minds, but didn't. We just had a ticket burning party.

Usually start off with farecompare, see all the other ones were deleted. But check those, their sites, and even the airlines directly for the best rates. Day of the week sure makes a huge different in rates, so check them all.

Tons are on the net, but don't include taxes, refundable tickets will clean out your bank account. On our last flight, had to use self check in, even though a bunch of attendants were standing around, hit us pretty hard for extra baggage. Asked so many questions, couldn't help but ask the attendant if they are going to ask us how many times are we having sex. Got a good laugh, but one I did like, for 40 bucks extra got a first class seat, so took that. Even though first class today is like coach seats of yesterday, didn't have to sit for six hours with my knees jammed into my face.

Good luck on his flight, hope he comes here safe and sound. If he wants to buy a cup of coffee and a donut at one of those airports, have him bring one of those South African diamonds along.

My return ticket from UK is much cheaper than one way, who knows why bit it is.

Do you mean your "round trip" ticket is cheaper than a one way ticket? That's amazing. I have never come across that and I have flown around the world a few times. What the heck?

When I was searching for flights to bring my fiancée and son here, I learned that One Way tickets are almost, or equally, as expensive as Round Trip tickets. I checked several different sites, including aggregators such as Kayak and AirFare Watchdog, and different days of the week. Same results, and no reason I could see for the exorbitant pricing. I beat the system, though, because I had enough frequent flier miles, from numerous trips to see my love, that I could book a Round Trip for myself, and 2 One Ways for them. The one way tickets that way, were exactly half the round trip tickets.

And congratulations to the two of you. I wish you all the happiness, and a long life together.

I'm happy to say that my fiance had his interview this week, and his visa has been approved!!! Thanks so much to this website and everyone posting their advice, it really made this process more manageable than it would have been!

A quick question though, can he buy a one-way ticket to the US, or must it be a round-trip?

Congrats!!! star_smile.gifstar_smile.gifstar_smile.gif

One way tickets are some times twice the price of round trip tickets! It's crazy and makes no sense of course there are some airlines which this is not the case (Aer Lingus being one of them) I bought my wife a return ticket from Ireland to Las Vegas with united which cost $800 a one way would have cost $1300!

You might want to have a look at the breakdown of the cost of a flight. Certainly out of the UK the ticket price on long haul is increasingly mode of up of small bit (airline cost) and big bit (surcharges, tax, etc etc etc). From my experience judicious choice of the return leg can also impact prices. Hopefully I will be flying out Oct/Nov but will set my "return date" in the dead period between Christmas and Easter when ticket prices get really cheap.

I'll probably look flying back to another country to see if that lowers the ticket price too ! Airline ticketing is a game and one must become proficient in it....

I remember the days of buying back to back tickets in Europe. Two return tickets that ended up being cheaper than one. Use the outbound on one ticket and the inbound on the other. Chuck the other two legs in the bin. Crazy but fun for a while.

I don't see how the POE knows if you have a round trip ticket or not. Been awhile since the airlines sent us tickets via FedEx. Order your tickets on line, go to your airport, don't even have to bring your printed out flight itinerary, and just get a boarding pass, and only to your destination. No such thing as being able to show a return ticket, you don't have one.

On your return trip, if you do have a round trip ticket, walk in, empty handed, and do the same thing on check in, just get a boarding pass to your return destination.

Leaving here is usually easy, have one security inspection where they check out your underwear and all that, and your baggage goes to your destination, pick it up and leave. Coming back is not, go through that same security super long line, get your underwear inspected, but when you enter the POE here, for some unknown reason, have to wait in the super long lines and go through all this again! Plus you have to haul your luggage up to a half mile away.

Typical airliners carry at least 300 passengers, so you know that line is going to be at least 300 people long. We would never schedule at trip on that new Airbus that carries up to 880 passengers, there you already know that line is going to be least that long. But screwed anyway if one lands the same time you do.

Another nasty thing they do when coming back is you may be subject to a strip search, did that to my wife, stepdaughter, and mother-in-law, made one hell of a mess of their luggage, was very humiliating, yet another 2-3 hour delay. Speaking of luggage, really pound the ####### out of it, broken wheels, broken handles, not covered. Was told the only thing that is covered if they tear your luggage in two. And if anything is lost, the burden of proof is on your shoulders. If carrying a laptop, make sure the battery is good, if not, they will take it away. And 3.2 ounces means 3.2 ounces.

God, I hate the airlines.

Congrats!! There is hope after all... :-)

Round trips are by the far the cheapest, especially on SAA. Could come in handy if you needed to come back due to an emergency...

BUT, there are some really cheap Ethiopian Airline one-way tickets at times.

I would shop-around. Try Expedia!

Good Luck on your move!
