Rogers Golden Syrup has always been my favourite syrup. I brought some down with me and won over my husband. We just ran out and I spent 10 minutes in the Fred Meyer pancakes aisle in frustration. All the syrups are high fructose or regular corn syrup. Ugh! I did buy some expensive maple syrup but can't find cane syrup anywhere. Anyone know a store that carries it?

So looking around I discovered that cane syrup is actually called light treacle and has British origins. Who knew?!?! Apparently Amazon.com has some I could order in a tin. Never had syrup in a tin before, but I think it's worth a shot!

So, was I the only one that called "Kraft Dinner", just that? Kraft Dinner? Or Krappy Dinner...K-D, cause when I said Kraft Dinner down here I was looked at like I had two heads....I guess it's called Mac n cheese.....

Originally when the product first came out, Kraft Dinner was called that in both the US and Canada. The manufacturer wanted to market it as a meal during a time of depression and over-expensive products. Eventually hard times ended and the home brand in the US changed to Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, while in Canada they must have realized that by the time we pay our taxes we have no money left over and kept it called dinner.... Just kidding, I don't know why it's still called dinner here, but it's the same product and now you partially know why it's called something different.

Never sure whether to start a new topic or revive an older one on a similar topic but...

In addition to the Maple Leaf Cookies that Trader Joe's has had for a while (says product of Canada on the box), they also now have poutine kits that are actually pretty good!

I ALWAYS stock up on VH sauces when I am in Canada. Especially the plum sauce. Yum yum! I was supposed to go to Canada yesterday, for a week long solo trip to visit my family before classes start up again, but I decided against it. Not with the funky weather they have been getting lately! Before I was married, I had NO problem driving to the USA to visit my now husband, with a possible threat of snow storms...not so much these days! I had a list of things to pick up while there. I am in dire need of my Vicks inhaler. I know they sell them here, but they are disgusting (have something different in them). I have chronic sinusitis and these sticks help me immensely when my sinuses flare up.

Our Giant sells Red Rose tea. We can get Aero bars in the international aisle as well, but they are usually expired and gone dry and hard.

I never thought to look at Amazon for that stuff. the VH stuff i miss so bad especially the dry garlic spare rib sauce. Luckily some of the little ethnic stores carry my 5 roses flour yay. i was soo excited to see that cuz the flour here sucks lol. they only use soft wheat whereas up north its all hard wheat = higher protein=more gluten = better fro baking vol au vonts etc. smile.png

I'm glad I saw this, couldn't figure out what was wrong with the flour down there, the texture is just weird. The biggest problem I find in the Midwest is the lack of organic produce, I guess they don't have greenhouses going locally all winter like on the coast. It's good to know about the coffee crisp, I'll send a bunch with my red rose tea! Ooh, and coffee, I'm coming from a town that has a couple dozen coffee roasters....

OK...here's my two cents (for what it's worth LOL)...

1 - If you miss plum sauce, I think that duck sauce is the name used for something similar down here (not exact, sadly, but it'll do in a pinch I guess). huh.png

2 - Canadian Cheez Whiz is SO different from the ####### they sell down here (at least in VA). I miss Canadian Cheez Whiz on toast with butter or Becel!!!!!! Has anyone found a state yet that even SELLS the Canadian version of Cheez Whiz???? cray5ol.gif

The flour is different in the US. They use a 'soft' wheat flour which is good for cakes and things like that. Canada uses a mixture of hard and soft wheat for its all purpose flour which means it can be used for baking bread as well as cakes and cookies and such. If you want to make bread in the US you absolutely do need to use what is called bread flour - it is a hard wheat which has the longer gluten strands which makes it good for bread. (Of course, I am now gluten intolerant so can't even use that anymore - I used to make my own bread all the time!).

I have been here long enough now that I've been able to find 'buy arounds' or 'make arounds' for most of the things I missed when I first arrived. My Dad used to bring me 'care packages' of things I missed from back home when he came, but now I find if you shop the international aisles of grocery stores or Big Lots or places like World Markets, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's (except we don't have those last 3 near by!) or specialty grocery stores you can often find unexpected treasures. A lot of Vietnamese grocery stores carry British based products and I can find most brands of British cookies that we had in Canada there (except Digestives - I've only found those at World Market).

Costco often has some good cheese available - the general US cheeses are really, really poor - 'aged' cheddar is 6 months old where real aged cheddar is just starting to get good at 6 years!:-). These cheeses are ok for baking or making your own mac and cheese but I often splurge and get a good Northern US cheese (Wisconsin does have some good cheeses), or Black Diamond - which is in the specialty cheese sections.

Big Lots has proven to be a surprisingly good source of good tea - I love a good Ceylon tea - and you can always get some really good teas on line. I used to order crumpets on line as well - the ones I have found here were very salty and I really missed the ones you could get at Loblaws and such.

I have also found better tasting and more nutritious items in the natural foods section. While Canada certainly leads the US in access to good quality gluten free products, more and more of them are appearing in the US (hehe almost all of them say 'product of Canada') and they do provide good substitutes to the high fructose corn syrup and artificial flavourings and chemical laden US products, as long as you are willing to spend some time reading labels. There are alternatives to the HFCS, extra fat and chemical laden products that stock most US grocery stores.

What I do still miss and haven't found a good substitute for yet is peameal bacon! Canadian bacon in the US is just ham. It is fine if you want ham - but I want that wonderful, succulent rich taste of sliced peameal bacon with its lovely cornmeal crust - there is nothing quite like it!

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Has anyone noticed that Campbell's vegetable soup in the USA is not at all like the plain ol' Campbell's vegetable soup in Canada! I miss it, alot. It reminds me of my childhood. I used to stock up when Shopper's Drug Mart would have them on sale for .59cents a can. When I go back I need to get some, unless someone knows of a close substitute.
