Illiteracy...Will this hurt our chances...

I am going to be really honest here although this is hard to talk about. My husband is from Jamaica and can't read or write well. He can sign forms and do most of the basic stuff, but is there anything in the interview process that is going to impede him from getting through? Is he required to read or write anything at the actual interview? I will be with him so i can help him navigate through some of the paperwork. I am just really worried. I don't want to open up a whole debate or anything but I just want to know what to expect.

BTW I wasn't sure where to post this- we are going for the CR1 Visa so I thought this would be the right place. I have literacy programs in place for him when he comes here. No judgements please, just honest, constructive answers.

Thanks so much,

BethAnn

Hi, i dont think it will be a problem at all. On the forms we had to fill out throught the process (CRV1), I filled out the forms for my husband and listed myself as filling them out because he cannot write in english that well. In his interview they gave him some material to read but they never asked him about what it said or if he understood it. he said it was just a sheet on abuse and his rights as a spouse, etc. but I dont think you guys have anything to worry about at all, and good luck on your interview! :)

I am going tomorrow for my husband's CR1 interview in London...

He is also illiterate/dyslexic :(

Don't worry about it, I asked that question when I first came on this site back in July. It's not a reason for denial.

Just describe that he can do basic things, but that you will be there help with forms and reading.

We also got a letter from the doctor that states he has this issue, in case they think it sounds weird.

Illiteracy can be fixed, and I'm sure if you say that you will be working hard to fix his situation, it won't be a problem :)

Hey there,

First of all Good luck with everything!

My hubby is educated etc but I still went along with him because I thought it would be better to be with him since he is a shy person and may get nervous...

Fortunately, he wasn't required to write or read anything. Therefore, I don't think your husband would be asked to write or read anything...

The only thing my husband was asked to do was show the CO some documents that they wanted to see again and confirm.

join him and he will gain confidence :) and I wish u super luck with everything!

Dont stress at all, at least he is able to understand the basic things :)

I think he should be fine at the interview. I do like the idea that TomandCatie brought up about getting a letter from a doctor explaining things. Although, I guess maybe a former teacher/professor might be a better route for you. I hope things go well for you two! Good luck :)

I love a guy who looks like he could be on Criminal Minds as either an agent or a killer.

A letter is not going to work in JA.

At the interview, you will not be able to be with him, so you will have to work with him in finding the paperwork in a systematic order for the IO. At the interview, he will have to read statements and fill out some forms before he is interviewed. Make sure he knows how to spell and write your name. He will have to write both of your names on at least 3 forms.

Also, post questions in the Caribbean section, those from JA will be able to answer your specific questions.

OK now I am panicking. He can write my name- that is not a problem but I wasn't aware he would have to fill out forms at the interview. Can I help him fill these forms out? I can organize the paperwork so the IO can access it easily.

Oh God please let this not be an issue...

They are not long intensive forms, but he will have paperwork to complete at the interview, and you cannot do it ahead of time.

Listen....Make a binder for your husband and color code sections. Make sure he remembers what is in each color. The IO is only going to ask him for the paperwork, he is not going to look in the binder for the paperwork.

Your husband is not the first, nor the last with a lack of education. There are no grounds for denial due to education. There are no requirements for education or employment for immigration with a CR1.

Thank you. I will do everything I can for him. But if the IO figures out that he is illiterate is this grounds for denial?

Being illiterate does not cause a denial & from what I've heard 95%

of the time USC spouse are not allowed in unless the Embassy requests

their presence...I must say you seem to be a patient lady who loves

this man, being outside waiting will give him more courage.

As soon as you get here start teaching him to write both your names,

aqe & crash course in answering only the questions asked, let him know

the state you live in and where you work.

I understand its almost an open forum where everyone hears the others

business, tell him not to be embarrass or shy so it does not get translated

that he may be lie-ing, he can also be upfront and day he'd like stuff to be

read to him as he's unable to read. When he gets to the US get him in literacy

classs

Hope you don't mind my curiosity, what's his age range?...best wishes at the

interview
