I am prepaing the I-864 packet for my husbands visa. My friends are like doing it on your own is difficult and i can maybe miss something out. The attorneys charge alot of lump sum fees so I have been calling NVC daily and asking things so i am able to prepare the packet myself. Is it important to get an attorney for this or one can do it themself??

Have most people done it on their own or hired a lawyer???

People give me advice....

I used an attorney but it was based on the fact that my husband was coming from Morocco. I think attorney's are necessary based on where your spouse may be coming from. However, if you have already started to process and are at the NVC stage I wouldn't worry about a lawyer until after the 1st go around. And many people are approved the first time around (My husband was approved the first time). I spoke to many people who did not use an attorney and besides the wait didn't have problems. If you get through the USCIS phase without incident I would wait for the attorney and save the money.

It's important to remember and something I discovered, NVC is only a review station. They verify that all your documents are in the file and then they submit the file to the appropriate consulate. VJ has a list of items you need to submit to NVC. I would recommend following the chart VJ provides and you'll be fine. I used it when gathering up all my documents and I didn't have any big problems. NVC stated I didn't include the police report for my husband, which I did. NVC representative told me to resend a copy of the document stating, "This is the correct document please move case file forward." They did and we had our interview a month later. Just make sure you keep a copy of everything.

Good luck.

i actually did have an attorney and i can tell you that it was a waste of money and time. I filled out the forms better than his staff did! Look around VJ and the forms it has online to give you an idea to start.
