Governor signs bill hiking California minimum wage

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Calling it a "matter of justice," Gov. Jerry Brown put his signature on a bill that will hike California's minimum wage to $10 an hour within three years, making it one of the highest rates in the nation.

The legislation signed Wednesday at a ceremony in downtown Los Angeles will gradually raise the current minimum of $8 an hour to $9 on July 1, 2014, then to $10 on Jan. 1, 2016.

The increase is the first to the state's minimum wage in six years and comes amid a national debate over whether it's fair to pay fast-food workers, retail clerks and others wages so low that they often have to work second or third jobs.

Brown called the bill an overdue piece of legislation that will help working-class families and close the gap between "workers at the bottom and those who occupy the commanding heights of the economy."

The governor was joined by state legislators and business owners who supported the measure, saying increased wages would boost the state's economy.

The state Senate approved AB10 on a 26-11 vote Sept. 12, and the Assembly followed hours later on a 51-25 vote. Both chambers voted largely along party lines.

Awesome...He just raised the price of everything in California, which will make the wage hike ineffective

The only real effect will be raising the cost of doing bussiness in California and hurting thier econmy

I mean if the cost of my Big Mac goes up a quarter, then I got to charge my customer more etc etc.

Yes, Republicans laugh at poor people, and wonder why they don't get elected anymore.

I think it's because they have abandoned the Goldwater theories and adopted this bizarre social Conservative neo-con hoarse ####### that has nothing to do with what I thought Repubs stood for.

and they keep trying to out democrat the democrats with idiots like McCain and Romney. I bet if either one of those losers had been elected you would not have known Obama was not in office.

If I was head of the RNC I would send out a Memo

Dear Members,

The first idiot that says abortion or rape next election cycle gets shot.

Maybe they should try to out-do the Dems and offer them even more free stuff. I guess that's how to get the poor vote.

Sad truth is, the Red states are the poor states, and the Blue states have all the money and jobs.

“Now look at the exit poll in today’s New York Times. Yes, indeed, Obama did very well among women, Latinos, and African-Americans. But in sharp contrast to 2008, the partisan split along income lines is huge. Obama’s vote percentage declines in straight line fashion as income rises. He got 63 percent of the votes of Americans making less than $30,000 and 57 percent of those making between $30,000 and $50,000. Above $50,000, the Other America kicks in. Romney won 53 percent of the votes of Americans making between $50 and a $100 thousand and 54 percent of the votes of Americans making above $100,000. The Democrats’ poor showing in the House elections — they way under-performed for a party that had lost so many seats two years before — probably reflects a substantial Republican advantage in money, including the famous Superpacs, some of which poured resources into Congressional races. It was surely also affected by the White House’s reluctance to spend time and resources trying to elect Democratic House candidates. As the President negotiates for a Grand Bargain in the face of the Fiscal Cliff, these are realities that are worth pondering.”

Like McDonalds needs to raise their prices when they make BILLIONS.

The GOP is brainwashed.

I don't eat there. But for these multi-billion dollar companies to claim they'll be hurt by a higher minimum wage is pure bull$#it.

Amen..That is what most don't grasp..If McDonald's pays 12 dollars per hour instead of 9, then the LPN making 14 is going to be worth 18 and so on and so on.

When it's done everything cost more and the McDonald's worker is back to square one

Why don't we just pay everyone in the U.S 85K a year..That's a good figure

Worked in Russia right

I don't eat there. But for these multi-billion dollar companies to claim they'll be hurt by a higher minimum wage is pure bull$#it.

It is BS..They will just pass it along, wage inflation will happen.Everything will cost more and in 3 years the buying power of the new wage is erased

The company wont be hurt by it. They'll just raise the prices and higher fewer workers. The people that work there and the consumer will be hurt by it.

and that is so easy to understand, why is that so hard for so many liberals to grasp

Every economy has entry level jobs and apex jobs. It's a scale.. if you push up the bottom of the scale the top is going to move.

McDonalds is not meant to be a career, unless you progress into management
