KENNEBUNK, Maine (AP) — A spokesman says former President George H.W. Bush was an official witness at the same-sex wedding of two longtime friends in Maine.

Jim McGrath says Bush and his wife, Barbara, attended the ceremony Saturday joining Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen. He says they were there as private citizens and friends.

A photo posted Sunday on Thorgalsen's Facebook page shows Bush signing the marriage license as a witness. She captioned the photo: "Getting our marriage license witnessed!"

Do you seriously think in these terms? Good people can do bad things, bad people can do good things. Former presidents are people not simply figure heads of political party ideology. If a guy does a good thing, he does a good thing it really doesn't matter what the political affiliation or whether there is any at all. I don't understand the thinking on this at all.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Does who think in what terms? As many hearts as you have next to your name, I'd think you'd know how to quote a post and reply to it by now.

She just loves a good tussle, there is no rhyme or reason to half of the posits she makes.

I know. Just taking the free shot since she likes to beat everyone else down. devil.gif

Sr loves the gays and Jr paints cat memes. I'm coming around to the Bush family.

Kinda makes you wonder if presidents do actually run things, or if it's their advisers running the show?

Everyone tries to save their legacy late in life.

Good for him...he knows some gays. Next he'll officiate a black wedding and maybe complete the trifecta by loving an illegal alien.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

I think you do. It's called - competition. Why do many debate various topics in this forum? To make a difference in the world? rolleyes.gif

The Bush family aren't bad people. They're decent people. I don't like their politics - and Jr. crossed a few too many lines for the politics for me - but they're good people. I've always had a lot of respect for Bush Sr. His putting the good of the country ahead of his re-election prospects was quite amazing. He's a very intelligent man. I respect Bush Jr. not for what he did in office but for what he has done and continues to do all across Africa saving and improving the lives of so many of the least fortunate people on this planet. It's one of the privileges a US President has after leaving office. He can really make a difference in the world and how they use that ability often says more about their personality than their time in office. I applaud the elder Bush for making this statement. He may have been one of the few one term Presidents. But he is a great man.
