I called jesse white's office regarding this same thing, I was told that once hubby gets his 1 year green card he will qualify for a license, and that until then it is legal for him to drive on his foreign license.

I have no idea who he is.

I have not and have no wish to go through every State's regulations. That is not normal.

I have no idea who he is.

He's the Secretary of State for Illinois. You're welcome.

Just reading through this topic, and the advice I'd give to any of you who find yourself settling in Illinois, is find the remotest, most rural office you can. I'd suggest Southern Illinois (which, believe me, is a different WORLD, let alone state, in comparison to central IL & Cook County) where there are more bumpkins than you can shake a stick at. I got mine with a passport & SSN card.

And whoever said the local cops simply can't be bothered with all things remotely alien to them? Spot on.

Jesse says 90 days on his web site.

30 days for CDL.

I started this thread and just to update you.

I eventually managed to get my license about 5 weeks ago. I still don't have my 'green card' but I heard from someone in another thread here that Woodstock would give me a license with the EAD. And they did.

Having gone through the UK driving test about 2 years ago, I have to say that the Illinois driving test is a joke. Twice around the block, reverse around a corner, stop and the right (with your wheels facing the right way) and then pull away again. Took all of 10 minutes. Also had to do the written test based on the 'Rules of the Road' but that was relatively easy. The booklet is available as a PDF, so I e-mailed it to my Kindle and read it as i could.

I've been in Chicago for almost two weeks. Last Thursday, I went to the DMV on N Elston to get a state ID. I brought acceptable identification documents from the list here. The lady at the greeter desk checked my documents and gave me a number. When it was my turn, the DMV representative at the window told me that I cannot be issued a state ID as I do not have enough validity on my K-1 visa (expiry 10Jul2014) or my I-94 (expiry 27May2014). She said these documents needs to be valid for at least six months. I explained that the K-1 visa is no longer valid as it is a one-time entry visa. Take note, I was only applying for a state ID, not a driver's license. The lady seemed unsure about what she was telling me so she said she'll check with somebody. When she returned, it was the same story. I was told that if I want to discuss further, I can take it up to the supervisor's desk. The supervisor was not very pleasant when she said that I do need either a green card or EAD that is valid for six months to get an EAD.

My EAD application was received last week and is currently in process. However, I would really like to get a state ID. Does anyone know a DMV location where I could perhaps get a state ID issued without being asked a green card or EAD?

California will be giving them to illegals.

Most States the first document you will get on a K1 will be the EAD that works.

Why do you want State ID? You have your Passport.

Because my wife's credit union requires a state ID in order to be added to her account, a passport does not suffice.

Much easier to insist to talk to someone with a few brain cells.

I was able to add my husband on my bank account without him having a state ID, he just used his passport, and they wanted a copy of the social security number as soon as he got it. That bank is closing their branches here so we just had to get an account at a different bank, same deal, just used his passport and SS card. I'd suggest find a different bank, that credit union is just being annoying, there is no rule that says you can't be on an account except for each banking center's own rules.

did you get your license somehow? i went to take my written test today but i was told that i have to have visa that is valid for 6 months or a year. i tried explaining about k1 visa and the lady went to ask another guy but she returned with a twisted story. now she wants a document that has my visa entry number on it or something. it Starts with A. it was written by immigration officer at the POE!

I haven't gone back since I went there to apply for a state ID. The people at the DMV location I went to told me the same story - that I need a visa that is valid for 6 months in order for them to issue a state ID or driver's license. I've decided to wait for my EAD before I apply again.
