My experience applying for a SSN for a K-1 visa holder

Hi Everyone,

The process of applying for a social security card for my wife was easier than I thought it would be. She is a K-1 visa holder and we are already married (obviously).

Here's what we needed:

-Her passport

-The SS-5 form filled out (this can be done in the office)

-Our marriage certificate (to get the card in her new name)

There was no need to provide an I-94. Perhaps that varies by office, but it seems to me that if it is now electronic and people don't receive one at the POE, then there shouldn't be a need to bring it with you. Regardless, I brought the one I printed from the internet just in case.

There was also no need for extra identification per the SSN guide here on VJ. All we needed was her passport.

I also didn't have to fight for the fact that a K-1 holder is entitled to a SSN. Maybe I just got a competent office. I made sure to mark question 5 on the SS-5 as "Legal alien allowed to work".

Finally, with only a couple weeks left before she crosses the 90 day barrier, there was no issue. The guide mentions you don't want to apply too early or too late, but in our case applying "late" was not problematic at all. We saved a trip by waiting until we had a marriage certificate in hand to get her SSC in her married name right from the get-go.

I just wanted to share this info in hopes it will help someone else. You all have helped me a ton. Thanks!

Today my wife and I went with Passport, K-1 Visa inside, I-94, Marriage Certificate, SS-5.

They asked for my social.

I said...we need to enroll for a new card.

The lady asked to see our documents and what kind of visa.

I handed my wife's passport and I-94 and said K-1.

Application and marriage certificate was in plain view.

Then I said... You may need to verify eligibility with the Visa name.

She said... did you get married?

I said...Yes. I have the marriage certificate to show the name change. We'd like to get the card in her married name, but I have 2 applications filled out. One maiden and one married. We can use whichever you need.

They said..I can issue in the married name.

I said...Great, I'll shut up now and let you work.

After the horror stories we had a smooth process, but this is a single datapoint. Be careful out there.

The security guard accused me of breaking his computer and generally badgered most of the people visiting the office.

After check-in, another woman said something about not signing a form to the guard and he barked something about electronic signatures.

Then girl at our window was in a bad mood. After she printed out our number confirmation we just thanked her and said I'd be back when it's time to retire. No need to go for the "Perhaps we didn't sign" role play game...
