Dear VJ members,

My fiancee's K-1 Visa was approved a week ago and yesterday she picked up her updated passport and all other material

from the US Embassy in Athens, Greece. She is scheduled to arrive in the US on Friday. So first all, allow me to thank all the

wonderful people who have been more than generous with advice on this strange 8.5 journey ! Thanks so much !

I have a few questions for you all, as I'm starting to look into what's needed to apply for an SSN for my fiancee (following

the directions on http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn).

a) My understanding is that any foreigner entering the US no longer need to complete a I-94 form with him/her that is completed on the plane. Is this form now completed by the officer at POE ? Does the officer hold on to it or should

my fiancee request it ?

I did some browsing through Visa Journey. Is it necessary that we recover a scanned copy of the I-94 from this site:

All in all, where I'm a little confused is whether an I-94 is really needed anymore to apply for a SSN at the local SSA office ?

b) She needs to have her passport with the VISA on it. Am I correct that the Visa page is removed upon entering the

US or is simply some "invalid" stamp placed on it ?

c) Beyond her passport, SSA requires an additional form of ID as explained on the VJ website. The SS-5 instructions indicate

that for non-US citizen "If you are not a U.S. citizen, we must see your current U.S. immigration document(s) and your foreign passport with biographical information or photograph." ... So I'm assuming the passport and the immigration documents

are enough ? Would an international driver's license work as well ?

d) Finally, what is the form RM 10211.530 ? When I go to this link (https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211530),

it is hard to decipher what exact form needs to be completed. Does this mean we simply need to supply the I-94 ?

ANy feedback is hugely welcome.

Many thanks in advance and I wish everyone the best in their own pursuits !

a) Go to this site: I-94 Admission Number Retrieval

b) On entry the visa will be stamped, with the expiry date on it

c) Just need the i94 and passport, with visa in it. Not sure about driver's license.

d) All I took was the i94 and passport. Don't think anything else applies to a K1.

Fill out http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.pdf and print.

The I-94 is automated now. You can retrieve your I-94 info online and print it out to take with you to get your SSN and to send with your AOS paperwork. https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html

The passport with K-1 visa in it is all that should be needed as far as ID goes.

The RM 10211.530 from the SSA site that is linked in the SSN guide here is just to print out and take with you in case the SSA worker tries to tell you the K-1 holder is not eligible for an SSN. That page shows the K-1 is a legal alien allowed to work. That is what makes them eligible to receive an SSN.

~ Moved from K-1 Process to Social Security Numbers- topic is about applying for SSN ~

Hm ? That sounds incredibly odd to me. It didn't happen in our case. We're actually discussing how to proceed with SSN issuing, as the civil wedding is happening on Tuesday and we have to take into account the fact that she'll change her name.

My full understanding is that you obtain your SSN from the local SSA office, i.e. once your fiance arrives to the U.S. . The only reason he/she would do that at the consulate is if that consulate has a special rule. I'd be curious what an expert would have to comment here.

You do not get an SSN at the consulate. You must go in person to an SSA office and apply once you are in the US. http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

No.

But let's assume it is, a new thing.

For clarity, call back 5 times over 2 days when they are open, tell the NVC TeleOperator that yer chasing a K-1 visa, and ask if the SSN is issued at the Consulate. Record yer answer, each time, then take the >40 percent answer as gospel,

then

report back, your research results, here in this topic.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

I'm quite sure we filled out Legal Alien not allowed to work. The SSA employee told us that we should come back when her work authorization is issued (which will have her new and married)

name to request an updated SS card. Note that this employee seemed quite knowledgeable and didn't give us a hard time.

I ticked legal alien allowed to work which is correct, however when you get your SS card it will say on it " valid for work only with DHS authorization".

I just came back from social security officer after applying for ssc, and the lady said that I can start work as soon as I will get my card.. Hmm I think she was wrong :D or maybe she didn't know the status for K-1. Now waiting for the card to see what will be written on it, allowed to work or not :D
