Toronto isn't comparable to NYC, not even close.

Even Boston isn't comparable to NYC.

NYC barely compares with NYC.

I don't imagine they are comparable to the penny, but the jist is that they are all expensive places to live. More expensive than most. Boston and NYC were just the first two cities that came to mind.

Canada on a whole is pretty clean, but there are some icky parts to every city. The best part is being in those icky parts and still not worrying about being shot!

Sorry, I don't like topics not about guns.

That seals it for me then. If I can't live every waking moment wondering when somebody's gonna pop a cap in my #######, then I can't live there.

$14 a week covers me and the wife. $20 co-pay i think.

Canada is pretty clean but mostly when compared to the north east. Nearly everything in our city is new. There's been a surge in population and businesses are constantly going up here so we're not really suffering from the "white flight" or ageing infrastructure the north east is seeing.

If you get full coverage for that $14 a week, then that's a steal. But if you have a high deductible, it might not end up to be so good if one of you needs prolonged medical treatment.

$20 or $25 co-pay and max out of pocket is $3,000 (not including co-pays of course)

I'm not sure of the specifics of vision but I've never had to pay a dollar for two dentist visits a year.

High deductible plans work out great for the bottom line if you have the discipline to manage your deductible and stay on top of your insurance company.

Most people, myself included, don't. That's what they count on.

As long as your under 35, that will probably work ok for you. After that the Dr visits and ailments become much more frequent.

I guess that's why I don't get as fired up about healthcare.

I had to get a hep vaccine before travelling to Hong Kong this summer and it was $0. The people at the pharmacy were amazed. BUT, I should also point out two previous pharmacy's one was like $600 and the other didn't have it. But I think that was a result of poor pharmacy training and lax standards. The inconsistency is nearly all of the root problem IMO.

Yeah, I understand that. During the calculation, I considered the cost of maxing out our out of pocket every year and it was still cheaper than the Canadian system if you included what I pay in taxes verses the comparable in Ontario. Plus, the ARE going to be many years where we don't have to pay anything outside of the weekly. Like my last 8 years.

I don't know how old you are, but I used to say things just like that in my 20s. I miss my 20s.

31. I guess we'll see if my mind changes. A guy I work with had triplets a couple years ago, so he maxes out early every year. Still has to fight the covered/not covered battles with nearly every bill but he almost always wins. And he has supplemental coverage through his wife's work so its not too bad a set up.

All this being said, I still think US healthcare is a joke and things need to be standardized. I kinda lean towards a public option but if the costs for insurance/hospitals/drugs could be somewhat standardized with the private providers, I think that would be a good option. But I don't have much faith in that option. Private businesses have a tendency to be more efficient than the government but way more greedy.
