I knew that I was going to need tax transcripts for my I-864. I had to retrieve a tax transcript a few years ago for one of my customers, and I was able to walk right in and get it while I waited. I expected to do the same thing for my I-864...

WRONG... I filled out my request form (printed online), and went down to the IRS office... and waited in line for about 30 minutes. When I finally got to see somebody, the lady told me "Ok, I can SEND THAT OFF FOR YOU". I'm thinking, aren't you the IRS, who ya gonna send it off to? It reminds me of the time I stood in line at KFC only for them to tell me at the counter that "we're out of chicken"... WHAT?

When I asked about "same day service" the lady gave me a fax number, and made a point to tell me that this fax number was posted all over the waiting room.

Came home, tried the fax number... OUT OF SERVICE.

Did a google search and found the following... since October 2003, no IRS office is doing walk-in transcripts!

Moral of the story... budget extra time in your visa journey to obtain your tax transcripts.

Good Luck!

I'm self-employed and therefore don't have W-2 income. I think that disqualifies me from using the "EZ" form?

I actually filed for my tax receipt transcript (form f4506t) with the IRS on November 17th and i still have not received them back yet.

I had sent it in the mail. There was a phone number on the form that indicates you can call to order over the form but when i called that number to check on my transcript it did not have the option.

should i continue waiting or should i file again??

I was just reading the instructions again (for the I864) and it doesn't look like you need tax transcripts for that either. It states:

"You must provide either an IRS transcript or a photocopy from your own records of your Federal individual income tax return for the most recent tax year. If you believe additional returns may help you to establish your ability to maintain sufficient income, you may submit transcripts or photocopies of your Federal individual income tax returns for the three most recent years."

I know they revised the requirements relatively recently, so there is a lot of confusing information out there. But looks like the current I864 doesn't require tax transcripts :)

Also, for self-employed:

"If you checked box 22(b ) (self-employed), you should have completed one of the following forms with your Federal income tax return: Schedule C (Profit or Loss from Business),Schedule D (Capital Gains), Schedule E (SupplementalIncome or Loss) or Schedule F (Profit or Loss from Farming). You must include each and every Form 1040 Schedule, if any, that you filed with your Federal tax return."

All of this is on page 8 of the instructions.

Hope this helps someone!

the problem with my case is that i have a joint sponsor so it would just be easier to have my joint sponsor provide me with a tax transcript vs giving me copies of his W2s and his tax return.

I also wonder whatever happened to those forms that we submitted to the IRS, r they lost or what? and whether i can call the main IRS number and ask about them or i need to try to find the number to the location i filed which is Austin Texas

thanks for the info

The transcipt was not an option in the menu, so just take the option about question about tax return. I got a live person, and she took care of everything. And best of all, it was free.

DanNNina:

Thanks for the GREAT info! I just got my tax transcripts faxed to me while the guy waited on the phone!

I think it took a total of 30-60 minutes for me to get my transcripts. The guy said the computer system was slow, so he had to resort to a different method of printing out the transcripts prior to faxing them to me. I received a total of 23 pages, covering 3 returns for 2003, 2004, and 2005.

For those others needing the same info:

1. Have a pen and paper ready, because each IRS person will automatically give you their "ID Number". They say it really fast, so you have to be prepared to write it down.

2. Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040

3. Select the option that allows you to ask a question "about a tax return" or a "tax filing question" (or something like that). I think its option # 1. DO NOT get led astray by an automated system to request a copy for a transcript. You need to talk to a live person.

4. As DanNNina indicated, the customer service is EXTRA-ORDINARY!
