Hi folks

DCFing London:

For immigrant visa application I have two questions about translated documents that are not in English.

1. Can I translate the documents myself in English and declare that I am qualified to translate them?

2. Are translated documents still needed to be attested from Notary Public if you are taking originals with you?

Regards

Birdy,

Being fully fluent in my language and English, I had the same question. However, there is an apparent conflict of interest in you translating your own documents, even if you would do it bona fide. I suggest you contact the consulate on this point - I am going through Montreal and they promptly answered my question.

In my case I had to contract a licensed translator who would sign and seal the documents. No notary was needed in my case. Again, I recomend you contact the London Consulate first; rules vary from office to office. You will need to bring the original documents with you anyways.

Best, L&B
