Napa man arrested in stabbing death of wife

A 40-year-old Napa woman was stabbed to death in her home early Thursday morning, and her husband, Carlos Everto Hernandez Vega, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

The victim's 12-year-old daughter called 911 at 3:33 a.m. to report her mother had been stabbed multiple times, said Lt. Patrick Manzer of the Napa Police Department.

“Any time a young child like that has to witness something or be a part of that, it's a very sad situation,” Manzer said. “And obviously it's going to have a long-term effect on that child.”

The mother was stabbed in an apartment in the 2800 block of Soscol Avenue. Officers arrived within minutes of the call and found Vega, 42, of Napa, holding a knife in front of the home.

Vega dropped the knife and was detained, police said. But the victim, found inside with multiple stab wounds, had died.

“We're still working on him, as far as the background, but (he had) very limited criminal history,” Manzer said. “We hadn't had a lot of contacts with him. Even in the apartment complex, it was a pretty nice place.”

The girl was not physically harmed, and Napa County Child Protective Services helped place her with family members.

Detectives are still working to find out what happened between the couple.

“There's some allegations that they may have been estranged, but that's just an angle they're working on,” Manzer said. “They're just kind of understanding the dynamic that was there.”

Vega was booked on suspicion of murder, use of a deadly weapon while committing felony, and burglary.
