An 86-year-old Oregon man on trial for the shooting death of his wife carried out the attack after a series of grievances with his family, including his stepdaughter's failure to wish him a happy birthday and his complaint that his wife put the lid on the ketchup bottle too tightly, prosecutors say.

Deschutes County prosecutor Mary Anderson told jurors about Lawrence Loeffler's complaints during opening statements Wednesday at his murder trial.

Anderson said Loeffler made the criticisms about his family during questioning by officers about the death of 83-year-old Betty Loeffler. The prosecutors said the killing was a calculated act.

I'm sad that this UK publication has such slow news days, it has to dig in the USA to find things it considers 'newsworthy'.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Ban ketchup and birthday's.

Also ban non-squeeze bottle ketchup. I only buy that kind and I haven't shot anyone. Just saying...

I'm waiting for the, 'it was acquired illegally so doesn't count' posts which are surely coming.

The ketchup was legally obtained right?

I think it's sad, really, that his younger wife took advantage of his aged-ness.

And not wishing a happy birthday is fairly severe treatment.

Funny...what if he finds out she actually did say happy birthday, but he couldn't hear her and the neighbor screwed the cap on too tight?

Dooohhhh...

Yes, is an entire sub-culture dedicated to mucking around with the Old Folks.

Sure, I don't like it, but I do take note of it.

Although this is a UK newspaper this is the US edition. All the quality UK papers produce a home and an international edition. The international edition has more focus on international news, naturally ;)
