Folks,

My wife, got here on 11/17/2006 with a CR1 visa. However, she has her maiden name in the passport and green card which she got yesterday. Consequently we had to take the Social Security card with the maiden name.

Would it be advisable to change her name to the married name on her green card and ssn before the conditions are removed? please advise us as to what has to be done.

thank you

john

Hi John,

I'm wondering the same thing. I had it all on my maiden name because we hadn't registered our marriage at the Brazilian Consulate. We did it this weekend, and I got a new passport with my married name. I haven't received my greencard yet or gotten a SSN.

Please someone out there help us!! :help:

john,

She can change her name on the Green Card whenever she wants to change it, if she wants to change it. If she wants to change it now it will cost her the I-90 fee and she may find herself without a Green Card for a while, while they process the I-90.

You and she can make your own decisions about doing it now, or when applying to remove the condition, or at some other time.

I called the USCIS to get better information. Yodrak is right. You can change the name anytime you want it, but you'll have to send the USCIS the I-90 and pay for the fee. I'll do that as soon as I get my greencard (I'm still waiting for mine).

We decided to change my name now for personal reasons. We should have done this a long time ago but we didn't. I just got my new passport with my married name so I want to have all my documents now with my married name.

I wonder why you need this?

When you get the citizenship, you can change your last name, middle name and even first name if you'd like - all without troubles with the consulates and native passports

Well, not everybody wants citizenship... :) Besides, I can totally relate to the OP - I wanted to change my name so badly (it's a good name in my country, but here it's just so not American!!!) that I didn't even apply for my OPT - we went right to AOS, mostly because I couldn't wait to change it.

Filed AOS from F-1
Green Card approved on 01/04/07
Conditions removed 01/29/09

Citizenship Oath 08/23/12

I am in the exact situation, even worse. My passport is in my maiden name, my SSN, my GC as well, everything is in my maiden name. I wanted to change it and they said it will be ok but I will also have to change the passport which is going to be rather hard...I think I am just going to wait until I apply for my citizenship and do it all then.

I have a similar situation. My passport and GC is in my maiden name, but everything else SS, drivers licence etc is in my married name. I want to change my passport and GC to my married name. We will be applying to remove my conditions in March 08 - and I wondered if I could fill out the form (I751) in my married name, and put my maiden name in the names previously used box (despite the fact that my 2 year green card is in my maiden name). I am sure there is a reason why I can't do this.....but I wondered if this was possible, to get round having to pay an extra fee to apply for a new green card, on top of the $275.

What do you guys think? Any help you can give me would be really appreciated.

My situation is quite different but too close to be similar. My passport is in my maiden name but my green card is in my married name. Just recently I filed for I-751, I filled out the form in my married name and when I received my NOA receipt notice and Biometrics Notice is in my maiden name. My husband and I made an appointment and talk the Local USCIS officer, we told them the problem and all he can do is send an email to NSC and tell them the problem. After our appointment I wrote a letter to NSC where I mailed my applcation requesting to update their system to change my maiden name to my married name I made a copy of my green card, state ID, and the appointment notice, which is showing that I've been using my married name. The officer told us that it's a common problem.......
