Sorry but although what you are saying is true, it does not lessen the atrocity of slavery in the U.S.

That is the kind of liberal moral equivalency used by liberals to excuse the mis deeds of the Obama admin..When they have the indefensible they always point out something some Repub did years ago.

I think his point might be that the American slave experience is not uniquely vile...... which is how it has been presented so often.

I too was stunned to learn that Mexico alone imported nearly as many Africans as the US did and South America nearly 10 times as many. Conditions for slaves there were much more harsh, much more cruel simply because the cost of replacement was far cheaper.

Seldom are these issues viewed in a pan-vision but instead we thrive on misinformation and hold up the most extreme cases as the norm.

We also hold european societies to a much higher standard for human rights.... which kinda seems like a form of racism its self.

Who are the real losers in all this historical fixation? Blacks and Black youth who are propelled into life with this ever reminder that they are crippled and damaged by slavery and "all the work that still need to be done" to be fully equal in society.

No wonder Black youth so often have so much anger, no wonder they are so quick to defend any Black who might have been treated unfairly no matter his rap-sheet.

If I we a Black parent and my kid was put through this "underground railroad" experience I would be livid.

Slavery was accepted practice in many places including Africa long after the US stopped doing it. Nigerians still rate potential mates based on if their family was of slave bllod or free blood. The US no longer practices this, grow up get over it and live with the facts. Sticking ones head in the sand does not alter history.

Ok other places practiced slavery also..They were wrong also. That in no way lessens what we did

You are absolutely right but the question remains, why don't people in africa walk around with their history of slavery around their neck?

Do people in the middle east who actually perfected a huge african slave trade, have such a focus on their slave past?

Do Asians or American Indians do daily penance for their slave history?

In fact you can point to any place on the globe to find a history of slavery and more often than not more brutal than the American version..... yet it seems we alone

(actually the british have a version as well) have such a fixation on this one area of history.

"Uniquely guilty"

Americans cling to the "horrors" of slavery because they are a sad lot of cry babies that will jump on the poor me band wagon , "we" as in anyone posting here, have never practiced slavery, Josephs Nigerian family practiced it more recently than my US side but he isn't whining about how terrible it was. Actually those begat of slaves in the US have probably lived a more comfortable life than those that sold their brothers into slavery. Perhaps these descendants should be thankful for the good life slavery has brought them into.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

There is a quote from a Black leader, Booker T or Fredrick Douglas who essentially said the same thing, admonishing Blacks to put the past behind and be thankful of the opportunity that providence had blessed them and their future children with.

It is all part of the "you have hurt my feelings and now you need to give me some free money " culture of the US. Half the people that are pulling this SCAM are children of blacks that immigrated long after slavery

I understand your point.

However, in my lifetime - it was quite clear (from the black community) -

pay us reparations and we stop being @sshats and will stop living off of welfare benefits.

No one is going through with reparations, successfully. Now at my old age, in my retirement, I say - put up or shut up.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Who should pay it and who should get it?

And how far back do we go?

The Japanese who were held in relocation camps were granted compensation.... if they were alive, off spring did not qualify.

Even in that case, the GOV"T was responsible for the interment.

With slavery, the Gov't was not buying and selling slaves. Both the greedy recipients of slave labor and the Slaves are long gone.

MOst of the wealth was lost in the war anyway.

Apologies, Danno - IMO, it's just too late to be having this conversation about reparations. The time, for that convo, has passed (again, IMO).

And when it comes to the 40 acres and a mule, lore.

I would go along with that if the conditions were the same now... as then.

That may have been owed to the original person , if their descendants could prove that is wasn't received and traded/bartered off they should be given their share A can of alpo and some prime death valley sq inches.
