Hi,

I see that almost everyone takes their birth certificate (original) to the interview. Is this a requirement? Do they really ask for your original birth certificate during the interview? I sent a printout of my birth certificate along with the I-485 but I don't have it in original with me in the US. I have it back in India so I am just trying to figure out if I need to have it sent over to me before the interview.

Thanks!

A certified copy of your birth certificate is a required document for an I-485. Photocopies are fine to submit with the initial filing, but USCIS can ask to view an original certified copy at the interview or any point beyond it. Should they ask for an original and you don't have one then they will RFE you for it.

You should make every effort to obtain a new certified copy from India, since even if you don't need it for immigration you may well need it for the Social Security Administration (I was asked for mine - I understand most aliens are) or some other government agency.

That's what I have been thinking. I have the original birth certificate in India, I just need to get it sent over.

Thanks for the advice!
