Hi - my husband is trying to get a job we've filled out the applications, given a resume, but the company want more and more info. My husbands been mostly self-employed when he worked in his home country and his other place of employment went out of business, as well as another employer (one actually commited suicide which lead to the bussines going out of business) sad.png ? They want people to contact to confirm his employment history perferably a person in a management postion. I'm not sure how he can do this being self-employed and/or went out of business? Has any one has similar instances? Any helpful advice is greatly welcomed.

When my husband applied for a job, they asked for persons who knew him for character reference. He put his friend (a USC) and an uncle (also a USC).

I doubt the employers would even go thru the length of calling overseas just to verify a previous employment, unless the job your husband is applying for involves the government or something "highly classified" as such? Just a thought.

well honestly what i heard about working in us for new immigrants is lil hard but not impossible and it's easy if u want it to be easy , well
they ask about the hisotry in us (the experience in the us) so i think he shud go and visit employement agencies (not only one or 2 he shud visit all in ure areas to have more chance ) and he sud accept the salary they give (maybe it would be lil bad or not like ures ) anyway that just for the begining and to get some experience there (that will give him more chances in the future ) ,, well idk what kind of job he want , but he can say to these agenicies that he want to work in the usines (that's what a freind told me he's in florida). so don't worry he will be good and i wish u and him all the best :) :) good luck

Hi! I just got a job offer a few weeks ago and will be starting work in 2 weeks. Prior to getting the job offer, I was asked to send letter of references via email. It doesn't necessarily mean that they would call them, email is also possible. So, I got a previous client (when I was working as a self-employed consultant), a previous subordinate and a previous vendor I worked with to write a reference letter and forwarded those letters to my employer. If he was self-employed for the majority of his working experience, maybe he could get in touch with his previous clients and they can serve as his professional references. Perhaps, ask if they could actually write a written reference already citing how it was working with him, etc. It could be a generic letter of reference stating his strengths. I believe that the letter of reference will come in handy when they are already in the decision making process on whether they will offer the job or not, and maybe perhaps a factor as well as to how much base salary they would consider offering.

Good luck!

You never know. I applied for a job with the city, an they called every singe previous employer overseas (!). That was in addition to hiring a company to do a an international background check. That company also called my previous employers. I also had to provide sealed documentation in English directly from the police in Sweden proving that I did not have a criminal record. A bit extreme in my opinion. It was a pretty well paid job though.

I applied for a retail job in fine jewelry and had an international background search done on me as well. They also required a police record in English from Norway. Agree here, you never know.
