The mother of Aaron Alexis, the gunman who killed 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard, said today that her "heart is broken," but she is "glad" that he can no longer do harm to anyone.

Alexis' mother, Cathleen Alexis, read a brief statement to reporters in response to her son's murderous rampage Monday at the Navy Yard, saying she had no idea why he would do such a thing.

I am glad, for the same reason Aaron's mom is glad.

That's a bit of an odd statement.

Trust me, this is a line she has to walk. If she tried to make any excuses or anything less than what she said, she would be crucified.

I read that the parents of one of the Columbine kids said that when they heard that their son was one of the shooters, they prayed that their own son would kill himself and end it. It's got to be horrible as a parent to wish that your kid would die.

I think this mom is saying she is glad her son is dead, so he can't hurt more people.

I think that sentiment would be hard to say, and harder to feel.
