You know, you take away pageants and parents will find another way to mess up a kids life. The Olympic athletes we see on TV can do some amazing things in life. But many of those were pushed into their sport at a very young age by their parents and it isn't always for the best reasons. And it pretty much ruins any chance of them having a "normal" childhood.

I got an email from my daughter's school saying that the short shorts which have become popular with the girls are too short (my daughter doesn't wear short shorts.)

I agree with France here, really. It's just sad the government intervention has to override the common sense of the parents. Why anyone would want their daughter dressing like a stripper is beyond me.

It's also ok for a man to masturbate in front of you and your family so long as it's not directed at them. Maybe you misunderstood my views.

1. In my opinion, it's okay for an older man to have sexual relations with a girl (or the other way around) capable of consent... I think, for example, there are 16 year olds who are capable of giving consent and 16 year olds who aren't capable of giving consent, and that such cases should be tried on a case by case basis, as opposed to drawing an inconsistent age line, which varies state by state, country by country. Obviously, I don't think it's okay for an older man to sleep with an eight year old.

2. Yes, in my opinion, it's his right to pursue happiness, and he's not doing anything to me, except exposing parts of his body traditionally not exposed in public. If he's assaulting someone, that's a different story, but if he's doing whatever he's doing on his own, we're free to not look and walk away.

3. I wish the government didn't have to intervene. I don't think that it's necessarily the government's place, but taking young girls, at an age where they are not yet sexual, and making them sexual, is going to cause problems.

Like I said, perplexing to say the least.

My daughter is 17 -- she can legally consent to sex or even marriage in her own country, and can consent in many states in the U.S., but not in California, where we live. Actually, she's very mature and understands quite well that she's not ready to get pregnant, and should therefore not be having sex. If she were to have a boyfriend, I am confident she can make her own decisions at her age, just like she could make her own life-altering decisions driving a car from the age of 16.

I wouldn't be very happy if she were to be sleeping around the town with men three times her age, but if that was what she really wanted to do, I don't see how the couple of months separating her from the legal age of consent really changes anything.

If a man is masturbating in front of my daughter, so long as he isn't provoking her or threatening her, she would just walk away -- in her country, people defecate outside all the time (no privacy in the countryside), and she just doesn't look.

I'm not a fan of public masturbation, at all. I just don't think it's harmful to anyone, so I don't see why it should be made illegal. If some guy comes running at her naked and tries to rub his body on her or something, that would qualify it as harmful, and I would agree to make it illegal.

As for ridiculously short shorts, she doesn't choose to wear them, because she'd rather be elegant than slutty-looking... I never told her she couldn't -- that's for her mother and her to figure out. I don't think that short shorts for older teenage girls is really the biggest problem in the world, either... the sexualization of girls I think should be prevented is when much younger girls who don't understand sexual messages their clothes send out have no one to put some sense into their wardrobe decisions. In an ideal world, showing more of the body wouldn't mean sexual advertisement, and such things wouldn't matter.

Lets talk in general terms, if a 16 year old girl is taught by the state (in school) she can consent to sex with as many guys as she chooses, how far of a leap is it for this same girl to consent to sex with a guy in college?

We hear the ole "Older guys can manipulate the younger girl"..... I think most of us guys were just as manipulative in high school as college.

In some jurisdictions this same girl could legally marry a man of any age.

Sex between teens and adults is no doubt on the near horizon. We can see it with each news story and the reactions to it.

The vapors of the Christian era are fading fast aND EACH new generation comes into it's own, they will re-examine old prohibitions and discard those not inline with a secular based morality.

I have noticed an increase in the sexualization of children recently- young girls dressing like hookers, getting manicures etc. Boys dressed like rappers or members of boy bands. Last year I went to a staid department store in London (BHS) to buy some underwear for a 5 year old girl - there were no normal vests- only replicas of sports bras for girls under 10! Disturbing to say the least. Last year, I think, a mum in Brooklyn was arrested after inviting a male stripper to her daughter,s 14th birthday party, and encouraging everyone to blow him!

Perplexing as my opinions may be, I completely think that the mother in Brooklyn (and the male stripper if he was actually letting 14 year old girls blow him) deserve to be arrested and that they are completely out of their minds.

People think I'm crazy for thinking we should have open borders as well... My personal morals may be similar to many of the other members' actually, but the difference is that I don't think laws should be based on our traditional morals, but rather should be based on someone being directly and intentionally harmed. What if a Jain monk wanted to come to America, for instance? Arrested for indecent exposure, I guess?
