How to determine date of filing after RFE

There is a lot of info on how many days from the date of filing one receives the EAD, but I'm not sure which date to use. We filed 7/8. We were rejected because they claimed the check was not in the packet. I imagine a clerk spilling his coffee on it. They included a green piece of paper and told us to include it when we sent the stuff back with the check. Does that send us ahead in line at all?

Then the check bounced. It was a once-in-a-lifetime problem with our credit union, but of course USCIS doesn't care whose fault it was. So, back to the drawing board with a certified check. It was not rejected, just put on hold. Payment was applied on 8/26/13.

Then they said the AOS form I used was outdated. I sent the correct one back the very next day, and it was received by them on 9/5/13.

Any opinions on when my husband might receive his EAD? I've heard people generalize on this forum that it would be 3 months from the RFE return date, but actual experience seems to be a lot faster. The examples I've read are very old, though. Anyone have actual current experience with receiving an EAD after an RFE?
