i dislike Panera Bread.. it is way overpriced for what you get. the sandwich was meh and the soup was far too salty..

What is that? untrained teen-agers or illegal aliens who don't know how to 'make the menu' ?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Never tried their salads. Tried their bread and it sucked. Tried their pastry and it sucked. Thinking that if Panera BREAD can't get the bread (or other baked goods) right why bother with anything else? Maybe they ought to think about a change of name - Panera Soup and Salad or something?

I've never purchased their bread and have only had it in bread bowl soups (which I never eat anymore...calories dontchaknow). I never buy pastries because I don't like sweet things. Their salads and (sometimes) soups are fine.

So yes, perhaps they should change their name.

Right now I am hooked on Bruggers Bagels.

I love a guy who looks like he could be on Criminal Minds as either an agent or a killer.

In the midwest, I feel I could survive on 4 USD a day but not the coasts. Chicken prices are much higher than SMR's number for instance.

I live half way between Boston and Providence. Does that count as the midwest? I've seen a lot of prices throughout the country and while I'd say the prices here are a lot better than Hawaii and a little better than NYC, they are worse than anywhere in the west that I have been, including the Seattle area. I've never been to California. I bought boneless, skinless chicken breasts for $1.79/lb last week. I'd say I see a price under $2 about once a month, so I buy around 40lbs when I see it. It freezes well.

Indeed. You can't find a gallon of milk for $2.5 here. Or chicken for $2. Not happening. Not sure what vegetable aside from cabbage you could find for a buck a pound around here either. Bottom line, $4.50 a day would mean less than $100.00 a week for groceries for a family of three. I don't see how that's done in my neck of the woods unless you quit eating healthy food.

You live in Western Mass, don't you? Chicken breasts are on sale for $2 at Stop and Shop about once a month. Market basket has milk for $2.49 standard. For veggies, you can basically always get frozen broccoli or peas for under $1 per 16oz bag. Fresh carrots, onions, and cabbage will be under $1 always. Everything else is seasonal, but you can usually find something.

As far as total grocery costs, I'm usually a little over $100 a week for our family of three, but that's because I can. My wife and kid like their prepared snacks and treats and we also eat seafood and better cuts of meat sometimes. My point isn't that you can eat anything you want for $4.50 a day. My point is that you can do a lot better than legumes, dry cereal, and pasta.

Chicken breasts at my local Stop& Shop here in Mass are $1.79lb this week. I get them even cheaper at the big bulk stores.

But I do agree with Mr. Big Dog that $4.50 a day is not realistic, especially over the long haul. My wife and I usually eat 3 meals a day for a total of $20 per day, some days a little more if we have steak. That includes everything from morning coffee through supper, and a snack during the day, usually an apple or orange.

No, Western Florida is more like it.

Ah, I must have confused you with someone else. I remember having this conversation in a past thread with someone from Mass.

Like I said, I'm not saying that my family lives on $4.50/day per person. But $4.50/day is not beans and oatmeal.
