Based on VJ's flow chart, the first thing that my girl should do is SSN. My questions are,

1. Why does she need to have SSN before marriage?

2. Is SSN required for marriage certificate in VA?

Thanks in advance.

1. Some states require SSN to issue the marriage license.

2. Check out this link, and call your local clerk's office. http://www.weddingvendors.com/marriage-lic...tates/virginia/

I know in Kentucky my husband wasn't asked for one.

Good luck with everything :)

marraige in VA

hi there

i did some searching for you..it all depends on which county you live in ....do a google search for your county to see if the above link applies to you

for the ssn ..it all depends on when you get married...you are suppose to apply for one before your I-94 date expires... if she gets it before marriage at least she has it then after the marriage just go in and change the name ...

One of the senior members, rebeccajo, is from VA and I know they didnt need the SSN for the non-USC for their wedding. But rules may differ among counties of the same State.

In my opinion, it is to your benefit to have the SSN as soon as possible whether it is required for marriage or not. Because of having SSN we were able to open a joint bank account with Bank of America, my wife was able to get me an additional credit card on her account to help me build a credit history, I have obtained NC Driving Permit etc.

You will need an SSN or ITIN in order to claim her on your tax return. If she ever wants to work she will need a SSN. Some states require a SSN for a DL. So many reasons.... Just as easy to get it done and get it out of the way.

YMMV

One reason to get it ASAP is that some offices (or some employees) think that once a K-1er get married, they are no longer under the K-1 status, and therefore must wait until the EAD is in hand before issuing a SSN. Search for mdyoung's posts with the laws that refute that -- however, some offices put up a fuss, so most people go apply before getting married.

the other thing to keep in mind is that if she goes to get her SSN before the marriage, she'll have to go back afterwards to change it to her married name ( if she chooses to change her last name).
