WASHINGTON (AP) — The Census Bureau reports the number of Americans in poverty stood at 15 percent in 2012.

About 46.5 million people, or more than 1 in 7, were in poverty in 2012. That is not statistically different from 2011.

It was the sixth straight year that the poverty rate had failed to improve, hurt by persistently high levels of unemployment after the housing bust.

The number of people lacking health insurance dipped from 15.7 percent to 15.4 percent, with the number of the uninsured statistically unchanged at 48 million. Main provisions of the new health law don't take effect until 2014.

The statistics released Tuesday cover 2012, when U.S. unemployment averaged 8.1 percent.

The median household income was $51,000, unchanged from 2011.

The "war on poverty" is now half a century old, trillions have been transferred from some people to other people in the dream that we would "eradicate" poverty.

Not only have we not eradicated poverty, we have more of it and we can see the casualties of the war on the news and in emergency rooms every day yet the will to continue ... and even "invest" more in the war goes on essentially unchanged.

When the gov't gives a monetary reward to people named Jim, one thing you can be sure of, there will be more people named Jim.

You must be thinking of a thriving economy?

When you dump millions of under-educated people into a slow, sluggish economy, you drive wages down for service /labor type jobs and unemployment up.

In fact if you look at who gets hired, you will see immigrants did very well at finding (low paying Jobs) as they lower the pay scale.

Reality check:

CBO Report: Immigration Reform Will Shrink the Deficit and Grow the Economy

CBO estimates that fixing our broken immigration system will reduce federal deficits by about $200 billion over the next 10 years, and about $700 billion in the second decade. The CBO analysis made clear that the additional taxes paid by new and legalizing immigrants would not only offset any new spending, but would be substantial enough to reduce the deficit over the 20-year window. A significant portion of the new taxes would be paid by previously undocumented immigrants. While many of these workers already pay federal taxes, millions more will pay payroll taxes once they are able to obtain legal status and work above board.

CBO also found that commonsense immigration reform will increase real GDP by 3.3% in 2023, and 5.4% in 2033, a real increase of roughly $700 billion in 2023 and $1.4 trillion in 2033, due to higher labor force participation, increased capital investment, and increased productivity resulting from “technological advancements, such as new innovations and improvements in the production process.”

Reality check:

Reality check- a town has 150 construction workers employed at $18 pr hour average.

150 more workers from S.America migrate to this town, does the average carpenter wage drop over the next 5 years?

Now it might be true, the Mexican cafe might see more business and hire an extra server (from Mexico) and thus stimulate the local economy but how does this help the carpenters, mason, meat packers, warehouse worker?

This is exactly what has happened in many parts of the country NC is a prime example.

You don't care because your job is safe.

And Don't tell me framing a house is not work any americans will do, they did it until the cheap labor wiped them out of all these jobs 15 years ago.

Old people are lazy. America is mostly old people. America is mostly lazy people. We need young, healthy, hard-working immigrants to pay taxes so old Americans can play golf and get free medical care.

California is ahead of the curve on that, not only did a million people flee the state in the last decade and yet the state grew in population from Immigrants streaming in.

So what you are saying we will all enjoy California's budget surpluses... when we follow their example?

That's right. Ignorant people have been blaming the administration for sinking labor participation rates while that phenomenon is really to be blamed on our demographics. Yes, the economic collapse that this administration found when they began didn't help the labor force participation but the rate has been declining for some time as this nation ages. That trend will continue and actually accelerate unless we get some young blood into this country.

Why do you hate the free market?

Danno hates the free market because Obama supports it.

Why is it okay for American corporations to exploit foreign labor in Mexico, China etc, but not for red blooded Americans to do it here in good old America?

They don't think they're being exploited. They're happy to take the money.

Okay, so maybe it's American workers being exploited? Take lower pay or we ship your jobs to Mexico?
