Warren Buffett says reports he wants to scrap Obamacare are 'outrageous'

Stories saying that Warren Buffett wants to “scrap Obamacare” are false, the Omaha investor said Tuesday.

“This is outrageous,” Buffett said in a World-Herald interview Tuesday. “It's 100 percent wrong ... totally false.”

A story posted by Money Morning, a financial advice site, and picked up by the Morning Standard and other Internet outlets quote comments Buffett made in an interview on CNBC on March 1, 2010, when the U.S. Senate was debating bills that became the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.

But it appears from the Internet stories that the comments are recent.

Buffett said the stories took his comments out of context and added the “scrapped” wording.

“I've never suggested nor thought Obamacare should be scrapped,” said Buffett, who has supported Obama's political campaigns. “I support it. It relates to providing medical care for all Americans. That's something I've thought should be done for a long, long time.”

But the Right Wing Echo Chamber will continue to impress it's gullible readership with the lies and distortions they spread anyways. Right wingers must love being lied to.

Even the right wing Washington Examiner craps on the Weekly Standard, Wall Street Journal and Newsbusters for reporting this garbage.

What Warren Buffett didn't say against Obamacare

Conservative media stirred up a brouhaha Tuesday by resurrecting a 2010 Warren Buffett quote on health care as fresh news – and without context.

This week the Wall Street Journal's James Taranto, the Weekly Standard's Jeffery Anderson and Newsbusters' Noel Sheppard wrote articles claiming that Buffett, the famed billionaire investor, had called Obamacare "a tapeworm eating ... at our economic body."

It appears that the genesis for the kerfuffle was a case of wishful thinking from conservative commentators, who jumped on a shaky source to bolster their opposition to President Obama’s signature health care law.

“You know things are bad for President Obama when even Warren Buffett has soured on Obamacare,” wrote Anderson. Sheppard wrote that the interview with Buffett had been done “recently,” and questioned whether other outlets would cover it.

All three conservative outlets cite a website, Morning Money, as their source. The website quotes Buffett, in an article that mainly promoted a book called "Beating Obamacare: Your Handbook for Surviving the New Health Care Law," which is described as being written in “an easy going, easy to read style.”

Buffett's office told the Washington Examiner that he didn't make any such comments recently. "He has not made those comments," an aide to Buffett said, after checking with him. "It is entirely false."

Buffett made some comments resembling the reported remarks – but that was in March 2010, before the final approval of the Affordable Care Act. Back then, he spoke on CNBC about the health care reform process, bemoaning rising health care costs.

"That kind of a cost, compared with the rest of the world, is like a tapeworm eating at our economic body," he said, according to an Associated Press report of his interview.

According to a contemporaneous Politico story, Buffett said he would vote for the Senate's version of the Affordable Care Act, but ideally would scrap the bill and start over with a bill that focuses more on controlling costs.

Morning Money did not immediately return a request for comment.

One could. Nothing wrong with being suspect of a given source but here the facts are all backed up with specific links and references. Hell, even the interview with Buffett where he made those remarks on CNBC is there. It's over three years old. That interview predates Obamacare. Buffett is on record supporting the law after it's passage. Bottom line, there is no doubt that the claim that was presented here - namely that Buffett has somehow now come out in favor of scrapping Obamacare - is plain simply not true. Now you are certainly free to grab a shovel and hop into that same hole that Harsh is busy digging himself deeper into. Or you can do the smart thing and not join him in that hole. What's it gonna be?

all the times i've seen you specifically dismiss an article because it's "faux news" - yet here you are questioning why people should question a news source?

As I said, nothing wrong with being suspect of a source but the content of the rebuttal contained links to other sources and - most importantly - the very interview from which the Buffett quotes were taken - an interview that dates back to a time before Obamacare was even passed. Just a quick glance over the content should have been sufficient to see that the story presented was false. A false story peddled, by the way, on Rupert Murdoch's Wall Street Journal. So you see why one would want to be careful with Faux News - it's part of Rupert's propaganda organ as well.

See you got the link to that thread. You should try and read it several more times so that maybe one of these days you will actually grasp what I actually posted. It is painfully obvious that to date you have not been able to do so. It's not particularly difficult matter that was discussed but rather some simple concepts. Not simple enough for you, apparently. I'll see if my 7 year old finds a moment to explain it to you. But that would probably still be too tough for ya'.

Exactly. Just as Mr. Buffett did not say that he wants Obamacare scrapped.

Both were just distortions by right wingers of what wise men actually said.

one could ask the same question about fox news at times....

Fox is News? Surely you jest. rofl.gif

Fox stated very clearly that it was not a news channel and in fact it was purely opinions and entertainment.

Are you saying there is no news channel on other side of the spectrum?
