Anyone know anything about telescopes? I would like to buy my husband one for Christmas, and have looked at the Orion 09843 SpaceProbe 3 and the Celestron 21062 online so far. Yes, I know, I'm looking at cheap telescopes - but we are beginners. This would mostly be for looking at the sky, although some "is anyone doing something stupid in our area" type spotting too.

You gonna be carrying or travelling with the 'scope ?

Celestron made a mirror unit, ages past - I really, really like it - easy to carry in a backpack.

or - you gonna want to do image capture with a computer, as well? That's a whole 'nother topic, but DIY is possible - see instructables.com if you want to try a DIY thingie.

PS -- for really cheap (FREE!) you might want to put on a WANT on yer local FREECYCLE group (see freecycle.org for more info)

It's going to stay put on our balcony. We're only beginners, so I think image capture can wait until we move up to a better, more expensive scope once our experience warrants it. Thanks for the suggestion, Darnell, I hadn't thought of Freecycle at all, that's a great idea.

I've bought a few telescopes in almost new condition from Shopgoodwill.com (Search for a local auction if you can.) and I paid less than $30 for both of them.

Before you drop a hundred on a telescope I'd try the used route until you know what you like.

I'd also suggest a local astronomy club for more info.

11-13-2013 - Visa received

11-19-2013 - Leaving to PI

12-3-2013 - POE Seattle WA

12-14-2013 - Wedding Ruston Washington.

There must be an online forum for telescope enthusiasts. I'll bet if you search around a bit you can find a good forum and lots of helpful information.

I bought one last year for xmas for my hubs, we haven't even taken it out of the box because there hasn't been a clear enough night when someone doesn't have to work early the next day. I bought mine from here: http://www.telescopes.com/

You can also look at Youtube videos and ask the poster about it too. I would do it in a private message. Astrophotography is what I really want to do. Let us know how it goes. Have fun.
