I actually paid attention in my US History classes in college, where everything we learned in high school and before was a little tainted by nationalism.

Depends on how far you go with that. It was a preemptive strike from a caged tiger. The US was trying to limit Japanese expansion from an oil embargo. The japs wanted one strike to break American resolve. That back fired. But its not exactly cause and effect as there WERE other options for all parties.

Jefferson's vision of America was that of an agrarian nation, with cottage industries, and a minimally intrusive federal government, with most matters being settled by the states and local governments. He despised large national ventures, until President Jefferson found a way to both support his French allies and double the territory of the US by putting the US Government back into debt. (This was after castigating Hamilton for his Federalism.)
