I'm not getting the warm fuzzies from my family (siblings & parents) with regard to my pending marriage. I have to admit I was caught off guard my that. I "assumed" they would be happy for me regardless who I decided to marry. Not true.

My family was brought in with my fiance. Shes easy to love. We will be married on the 5th of oct and already shes being treated as if shes a family member. Heck my familys visited me more times since shes been here the last 3 weeks then the 5 years I have lived at my house.

If shes still in thailand have you tried getting premium skype and inviting them to talk to your fiance.

My family started sending letters. They all have line and chat with her and skyped with her while they were in thailand. They also sent eachother gifts.

She has been here three months. My family appears to like her as well, but apparently as a girl friend not as a wife.

Family is important to Thai people I totaly understand that. Maybe try to win some hearts by having a friend send some gifts like scarfs or something simple from Thailand and tell them it was late on a boat and you diddnt want to say anything when she got here because you diddnt know if they would ever arrive. Sometimes simple things that truely feel from the heart like that can win people over. Maybe have a Bi Weekly Thai dinner you two cook for your family or maybe just find that one family member who likes her and if they hit it off it will flood into the family?

Sorry to hear that. Having the support of both families makes for a less stress environment during holiday gatherings. I'm sure you are not the only one with this problem. Many couple still make work. After all, you are not going to live with you parents. Good luck!

Just tell them the king of Thailand was born in America, (Cambridge, Massachusetts to be exact). I think your family will eventually get over this. You are the person that will be spending your entire life with her, not your family.

This might matter to a Thai but I don't see how this will have anything to do with how an American family will feel about the O P marrying anyone.

I am also sure you must know in Thailand many people feel as his family does about our people marrying farangs. It didn't happen in my family but there were or are Thais that believed my husband would sell me or our daughter for example. Its all based in ignorance of course.

Slowlymans family will have to adjust to his choice of a wife or they will all have to live with the problems created by the lack of acceptance.

I do respect both cultures, and I am living both of these cultures. To me, the bottom line is: two people "love" each other, and that's all that matters. Hence: I stress the word love.

3 months? 90 days? you gots a marriage event to attend? ;)

But, really, as to 'the family' ....

Here's some dialogue that went down in my family, about 5.7 years ago...

someone - What? you got married to a Chinese woman?

me - Yup.

someone - Why you not marry someone local?

me - HEY ! Remember 2 years ago - when I asked you for your help, to find me a suitable lady to marry? I even went over the criteria with you. You know LOTS of people and their daughters, so I thought you'd be a great resource for helping me find a wife.

someone - You were serious?

me - Are you kidding me? You and I have a conversation for 6 months about this. Did you really think I wasn't serious? I even asked you for your help !

someone - I thought you were kidding !

me - Really? It's always been rare that I seek your input or ask you for your assistance. You should have known I was serious with you, as it was a 6 month conversation. You failed me, so you have no input now that she's my wife.

That was a real conversation. I've paraphrased a bit, removing the cursing and tobacco spitting moments.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

I didn't question your respect for the culture of either country. And this isn't about love. He is talking about the problem of acceptance by his American family of this women from Thailand that he will marry.
