Bilingual birth certificate w/o translation resulted in I-485 RFE

My apologies if this question has appeared in other threads.


I recently received a request for initial evidence for a Form I-485. This is what the RFE says:

"Submit an English translation of the foreign language birth certificate you submitted. All foregin language documents must be submitted with an English translation.

...."

The (photo copy of the) birth certificate that I originally submitted along with the I-485 has English and issuing country's native language (Chinese) on it.

I didn't submit a translation of the birth certificate with the I-485 because I thought that having English on the original birth certificate would preclude me from needing to do this.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Can I simply get the birth certificate translated and send that as evidence?

Also, I don't have any experience with translators - can they translate from a photo copy?

First of all, what country issued the birth certificate? I don't want to start explaining more only to find out that it is not applicable to you.

That's what they're asking for, so just get a translation (make sure to translate any text that's not in English, like maybe the header/footer or anything else that's written on it that's not just your details - pretty much all text) and send it in.

As far as I know, you do not need to get a professional firm to do a translation, anyone that knows both languages can translate it and put a certification on the bottom (I, John Doe, am proficient in both Chinese and English and this is an accurate translation of the document provided to me + name and address of translator).

If it's a complete copy of the notarial book you received from the notary office that you would have given to the Consulate, then I'm confused as to why you would receive an RFE now because I have heard reports that USCIS will only accept a photocopy of the notarial book.
