Attorney General Eric Holder and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be among those gathered in Birmingham to mark the 50th anniversary of a Ku Klux Klan bombing that killed four girls at the 16th Street Baptist Church.

The Justice Department says both are scheduled to speak at the University of Alabama in Birmingham early on Sunday afternoon, then will attend the church’s memorial service.

They will be joined by Governor Robert Bentley, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell and Birmingham Mayor William Bell.

The church was an organizing spot for civil rights demonstrations, and a dynamite bomb planted outside went off as Birmingham’s public schools were being integrated for the first time.

Rice grew up in Birmingham and knew one of the bombing victims.

A sculpture honoring the four girls was unveiled on Saturday in Birmingham.

The bomb killed 14-year-olds Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley, and 11-year-old Denise McNair.

While no one was arrested in the bombing for years, three Ku Klux Klansmen eventually were convicted in the blast: Robert Chambliss in 1977; Blanton in 2001; and Bobby Frank Cherry in 2002.

Boston honors those victims now, they didn't have to wait years for any recognition that they were victims of an abominable act.

Moreover, the perpetrators of the crimes in Boston where sought immediately and caught. The perpetrators of the atrocity honored in this article were not brought to book for more than 40 years. Hmm, yes, a very relevant comparison.

It's almost like anything done by the Obama administration offends some on the Right no matter what they do...like honoring children killed by a terrorist group. huh.png
