Some, actually many, employers are using credit history to determine who they hire. If you are a new immigrant they may waive the requirement as you do not have a history to check. Not all employers do this, but more and more are.

Why? The real reason?

Because they cannot discriminate based on race, color, creed, nationality, sexual preference, age, etc.

By requiring people to fill out applications online they avoid any face to face contact. Although they can guess that a girl named "Cinammon" is black. They can discriminate quite effectively without ever seeing a person face to face. As a rule, minorities have lower credit scores than whites. So the practice heavily discriminates against minorities, people of lower education and such.

This has replaced the old "color line" as it was called. Employers say it is because people with low credit scores may be more inclined to steal money or merchandise...which is, at minimum, called "Prior restraint" and is also unconstitutional

There has been some effort to stop this practice. The US government currently does it for all US government jobs.

Also, are you saying that the people who use credit reports are trying not to recruit black people per se, or just poor and uneducated people? Surely most employers use the 'where did you go to school and what grades did you get in which subjects' method of determining education? Discriminating against poor people just for being poor makes very little sense, so it must mean racism is at play. Wait, but surely racism is not the reason black people don't get work? I am confused. I thought the only reason black people didn't get work is because they don't need to work because they suck on the govmint teat?

i think the theory is that if you can't manage your personal life, you will not be a responsible worker. sometimes people have bad credit thru no fault of their own, but a majority of time it is because they are irresponsible and play the system

The get upside down in their home or car after trashing them and walk away or they party like a rock star on credit cards then don't want to live the Ramon noodle life style it would take to pay them back. Those kind of people are poor choices to hire as cashiers, tellers etc..If they have no integrity they usually make lousy employees and have poor impulse control.

Granted illness, divorce, job loss can strike andsometimes bad things happen to good people. However if you don't get in over your head you can over come it

Example--I had a 2012 Mustang Gt convertible..Loaded. I put enough down so i would not be upside down.when i saw a lifestyle change coming i sold it.I have 2 other vehicles, and it was not a necessity. I could have rolled the dice and kept it, i choose to be responsible.

People need to live within their means..Cable TV, Cell phones, Internet at home, eating out..Those are not necessities

Being poor is no excuse for having a crappy credit record. Choices are.

When he does what you suggest, he will be asked to fill out an application and provide his SSN and phone number and other information. Alla volunteer's for the hospital and had to provide all her information. They need this in orde to exempt themselves from the requirement for payroll taxes, etc. Volunteers are a closely regulated commodity as what they do is regulated as well as the hours they work. The IRS does not like anyone "volunteering" that is not in a qualified volunteer job.

Since his goal was avoid giving out that information...the volunteer idea basically sucks. He will still give out his information and NOT get paid.

Go back, copy MY post and go from there. Working fro YOURSELF requires no disclosure of personal information and can "pay" very well.

Why would the IRS be interested in volunteers? This should be an interesting answer.
