This is the email I received last week regarding the police check:

"Thank you for your recent inquiry.

Depending on which Australian state or territory in which you reside will depend on how to apply for the Australian police certificate. Please refer to http://canberra.usembassy.gov/obtain_police_cert.html for further information.

Note: you only need to apply for 1 Australian police certificate.

Your certificate can be based on a name check or fingerprint check.

If its based on a name check, it must contain all aliases previously and presently used. Failure to provide a name check certificate with all aliases may result in the consular officer refusing your application for a police certificate based on a fingerprint check.

I ended up doing the fingerprint one, filled out the form online from the state police website (nsw), wrote down the receipt number and went in to the police station for my digital prints to be taken. They then send it all off via Internet and I paid $175. I'm still waiting to get it back, but it's only been a little over a week.

I have also private messaged someone who only did the name check, they got their visa no problems. But I thought it best to do the fingerprints anyway, to be safe.

Sorry just one more quick question, on the NPC application form "purpose of check" question, do I tick item number 33, "Immigration/Citizenship"?
