I notice in the MRV fee acknowledgement letter I got emailed it has a list of documents needed for visa interviews. In this it includes both current and any old passports that show evidence of visits to the US. Anyone done this and been asked to see them ?

I don't know why they ask for old ones. They're not interested in them and I've never heard of anyone on here being asked for old passports in London (or in any other consulate, now I try and think of others).

You only need to take your current in-date one that you would like your visa in. smile.png

My last old passport was stolen (well, my bag was... which it was in), and I have no clue what I did with my old ones.

Not aware of any such issue in London. There are times an old passport is used... Maybe an unexpired student visa in a old passport, but you got a new passport or changed your name...I forget. But never to show visits to the US.

My passport had run out when I first applied, but I still used its passport number. At my interview Monday, I took both passports but handed in just the new one. The lady behind the counter commented on the difference in the passport number, and I explained that I did not want to delay applying while getting my new passport. She said "quite right, I would have done the same" If ever they was going to ask anyone for an old passport it would have been then. But she never. the new passport had no stamps in it.

I will take mine but only because it had a " cancelled without predjudice " B1/B2 visa in it.

Other than that why would anyone have their old passport? There is normally no need to keep them , they are of no use.

Thinking of the future, if you're going for naturalization, don't you need all passports - current and expired - at that stage?

No. Been there. Done that.

i saw that too, took my old passports to the interview yesterday and was not asked for them.

I have previously had a J1, B1, F1 and two H1B's, all of which were disclosed in my completed application forms.

As for a reason to keep them - I had to use mine to piece together and document all my visits to the US in the last x number of years that was asked for, and I needed them for the same reason when applying for my British citizenship which requires all dates and durations of absences from the UK in the 5 years before applying. I travel a lot, for work and pleasure and this took HOURS to complete.

And its also fun to occasionally look at all the entry and exit stamps from all the countries I've visited around the world.

Yes. I was naturalized in July and was asked for all passports at my interview. I do believe not everyone gets asked for them (interviews take place in local field offices and do vary a little) but all passports is on the checklist of documents to bring to your interview.

I was asked about US visas and I have had a few one of which was in my old passport and unexpired, runs out next year. I showed it to him. He noted it down, however if I had not told him I doubt it would have mattered but who knows what they have on the screen so I just told him. If you have them just take them, why not. If you have chucked them out then say that if they should ask.

My first passport was issued in 1976, they cannot expect me to still have that, the old black hard back type.

Nobbie, does that mean you're even older than me?! My first one is from 1985...

I was asked if I had any CURRENT US visa's, which I got confused with being asked about my old ones so I said yes, and was about to pull out my old passports containing them but they were only concerned if I had other still current - unexpired - visa's, which I do not.

I don't remember all passports being on the checklist. I looked and don't see it. Where did I miss it?

We did have a very easy officer. My husband had a small folder of original documents as requested on the yellow letter--my proof of US birth (birth certificate), proof marriages ended, marriage certificate, etc. So the lady swore him in, gave him the test, went through the application line by line, and stamped him approved. She said wait around for 30 minutes and we will give you your oath ceremony letter. He never opened his folder of documents. I was surprised since his only other interview was in London. Some of those documents have never been checked out except in photocopy.

OK - it's here under 'Have you traveled outside the United States since becoming a permanent resident?' http://www.uscis.gov/USCIS/Resources/Citizenship%20&%20Naturalization%20Based%20Resources/G-1151.pdf

It says 'Even if you have not traveled outside the United States since becoming a permanent resident, you should bring all of your valid and expired passports and any travel documents issued by USCIS to your naturalization interview. If you do not bring your passport(s) and other documents to your interview, your case could be delayed.'
