Bank statements are of little value unless there is 5X the shortage for meeting the poverty guidelines in the account. Only whole life with cash value would be looked at with life insurance, term insurance has no cash value.

Huh? What's the diff. in the 2? And mine says "cash surrender value" of $517.86 and currently $60,000 since I have been acrruing it since age of 15. So would I qualify or what?

Fraud isn't about morals, its about breaking the laws.

I think this idea should be left at the curb.

Difference between whole life and term life insurance?

Best talk to your insurance agent.

To be considered an asset, the "something of value" must be redeemable within one year. Like a house, or a (2nd, not first) car that can be sold fairly soon. Or mutual funds.

Insurance doesn't count normally, because it has no value until you die. Unless your policy has a cash value (the price the insurance company would buy it back from you today, and only applies to whole life policies, not term, as Hank said). I don't think insurance is even listed as "assetable" though technically it COULD be, given the above.

If you have a term policy that covers you up to $60,000, it is worth exactly: $zero.00. If it's whole life, the cash value is whatever the insurance company tells you it is. Sounds to me like $517. For AOS purposes, that would equate to $172 of the diff between your income and the 125% poverty level. (dividing $517 by three).

Life insurance is listed on the I-134, but without cash value it's of no value like you said.

And the factor is 5X for USEM with the K-1, so that $517 equated to $103.40

Laws and politics aside, I wouldn't suggest going through with this until your career is firmly in place. You could say that USEM is doing you a great favor. All the fees and tickets have put a remarkable dent on the wallet, and the next 3 (possibly 24 months for me) months will be tight since she can't conceivably work until 765 clears (and she gains her US dental licenses.)

I-765 can be approved within 2-4 months of filing. My wife had hers in about 2 months after filing. Heck she had her GC in about 4 months.

Very good advice, pete, though I rarely hand it out. Young love being what it is, and all. Most young couples don't wanna hear the "slow down and wait" speech from us older (hopefully wiser) folx. Waiting a year, even two, makes almost NO difference in the long term relationship. If you're afraid you'll lose that special someone if you don't marry them right away.... they are probably not the right one for you anyways.

But being financially STABLE is a big plus for any relationship. (Fighting about) Money is still one of the leading causes of divorce.

I think pete means because of the licenses it will take a long time for her.

Yes. In the good old days, a foreign dentist could just simply take a couple of exams and have a license to practice. Thanks to our new wonderful laws, they must go through 2 years of dental school to even think about working in any sort of high-paying dental capacity (anything above RDA.)

Indeed Dave. Even though our processing felt fast-tracked due to our ages, we encountered delays in processing. I thank God for those delays because those events gave me time to deal with domestic emergencies and make corrections to recoup those losses. If she had been around during those times, I imagine the extra stresses of those emergencies would have placed some doubts about this huge life gamble she just made.

Under the OP's financial circumstances, padding her bank account probably wouldn't help much because the consular officer will want to see bank statements which show the increased balance over time. However, if the OP could submit a padded bank statement along with a pile of other evidence, it might add value. In any case, I don't believe it's fraud.

I agree. A sudden jump in MY bank balance might be considered fraud, because it would be an obvious attempt to meet the minimums. But if it were there for a while, it might be viewed more favorably. Or, if my name were on multiple accounts and all summed up, that might work, too.

Then again, I seem to recall USEM wanting info such as length of time a bank account was held? Or was that for something else?
