A Dallas man has been arrested in connection with the shooting of an 8-year-old boy in the jaw Tuesday evening at a Lake Highlands apartment complex.

Brian Cloninger, 46, was charged with injury to a child. He remains in the Dallas County jail on a $2.2 million bond.

I really hope this dude is put away for life.

Here's more to the story, but there is no mention of toy guns. The Raw Story article says the boy was playing tag outside.

Brian Cloninger, 46, was charged with injury to a child. He remains in the Dallas County jail on a $2.2 million bond.

The boy, identified as Donald Maiden, Jr., was shot in the parking lot of La Bella Palms apartments in the 9400 block of Royal Lane near Abrams Road. Witnesses told police Cloninger had been seen waving his gun at people before the shooting, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

A resident at the apartment complex went outside after hearing the gunshot. The boy bleeding was profusely, and Cloninger was standing beside his silver pickup truck. The man asked whether Cloninger shot the boy, according to police reports.

“Yes I shot that kid,” Cloninger told the witness, according to the arrest warrant.

Maiden remains in critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery at Children’s Medical Center Dallas, according to Dallas police.

Family friend and neighbor Dundra Moffit said Maiden is “doing fine.”

An 8-year-old boy was shot in the jaw Tuesday evening outside an apartment complex in Lake Highlands, police said.

A suspect was in custody, police said. The boy’s condition was not available late Tuesday.

Neighbors said the boy was intentionally shot by a man in the parking lot of La Bella Palms apartments in the 9400 block of Royal Lane, near Abrams Road.

Dallas Fire-Rescue officials said an ambulance took the boy to Children’s Medical Center Dallas. The boy’s neighbors said he was in surgery late Tuesday.

Neighbor Dundra Moffitt said she was stunned by the news. The boy often played at her apartment with her son.

“My heart fell to my stomach,” Moffitt said.

Her son, Fabian, said the boy has a great sense of humor and is like a brother to him.

Listen, if you're gonna play that card, make sure it goes both ways.

If you're going to accuse people of not caring about children because there's a gun involved, you should also accuse people who post "hey look, this gun was used for a good reason" of not caring about the people in the story.

I care when an innocent child gets killed by an idiot with a gun. I care when an innocent child gets killed in any way, shape or form. It's always tragic when an innocent child gets his/her life taken away from them so prematurely. What's so hard to believe about that?

No.. Actually I don't think there is anything an 8 year old kid to do to justify shooting them,

The kid had a handful of toys

Unlike TM , there is no bodily harm an 8 year old could cause you, save having a sawed off shotgun which he did not

I did see one report that the man was waving the gun around before the kid came out

The man obviously had mental problems
